Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister successfully convinced his Chinese and Indian counterparts, Wang Yi and Sushma Swaraj to join him in calling upon all parties in the Ukrainian conflict to implement the Minsk Protocol and reach a peaceful resolution to the crisis through political dialogue during a meeting held in Beijing on Feb. 2. However, the article said that it is too early to say whether or not China is a true friend to Russia. The war in the Donbass region of Ukraine actually serves China's national interest, the article said, adding that while Russia hopes for a quick victory by pro-Russian forces against the Ukrainian government, China wants the war in eastern Ukraine to continue to distract the United States away from the Asia-Pacific for as long as possible. Russia is a tool for China to gain the support of developing nations around the world in resisting the economic hegemony imposed by the United States, the magazine said. Even though territorial disputes between Russia and China over the Kuril Islands have been put aside temporarily, Beijing still has ongoing territorial disputes with New Delhi. China is also Pakistan's most important supplier of weapons in the latter's conflict against India. A real alliance between Russia, China and India is unlikely to be formed since they all have different national interests and sometimes are even hostile to one other. During the meeting held on Feb. 2, Lavrov was the only one to discuss the civil war in Ukraine while Wang and Swaraj stayed neutral on the issue. At the same time, the Russian and Indian foreign ministers' suspicions about China's "One Belt One Road," for the establishment of a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and a New Silk Road Economic Belt, which would see China linked to Europe, have not been diminished by the meeting.
