They’ve just managed to “sink” a nuclear-powered US super carrier — and half its battle group. The French Ministry of Defence has revealed one of its attack submarines pulled of an astounding upset during recent war-games in the North Atlantic. The Aviationist blog spotted an article on the French defence force’s website — quickly withdrawn — which told how one of their submarines, the “Saphir” tackled the might of the United States’ navy off the coast of Florida. Not only does a result such as the above have the potential to be politically embarrassing for the losing side, it also exposes the existence of weaknesses any future enemy may exploit. But rumours abound of similar significant victories by minor nations against the titanic icons of America’s naval might. Both aircraft carriers and submarines are facing increased scrutiny as to their role in future defence forces. Both are immensely expensive. Both project immense power. But their abilities to survive a modern hi-tech battlefield with ever increasing enhancements in sensors and weapons has been called to question in recent years. I watched a small bit of that movie with Tom Cruise about them going to the Naval Flight School called "Top Gun". It is a pretty sharp flick. ;)

Saw a commercial for the US Navy yesterday. Believe it or not, their new motto is "To get to you, they'll have to go thru us first." That's Madison Avenue marketing at it's finest.
The whole marketing of the military is insane these days. Much marketing is driven by what I call the Video Game Agenda. If they were honest they'd show depressed vets without limbs struggling for any attention at VA Hospitals in their ads. This is what works for a string of generations that are addicted to the TV.

That info isn't as easy to locate as it use to be and the few referencings that I could now are for a much earlier timeframe than I'd expected. During the first phase of the 10 days naval exercises, the French Saphir sub was part of the so-called friendly force to support anti-submarine warfare. However, in the second phase of the games, the Saphir turned foe and was integrated with the imaginary enemy forces. Starting to vanish already like it was a Philadelphia Experiment sequel sub-titled, Part Deux: The Unfraternal/Unbrotherly, or something. Unsourced Comment: THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR WAS NOT A PLAN ORIGINATED BY JAPAN. AT THE 1932 WAR GAMES IN HAWAII THE ASTUTE JAPANESE OBSERVERS KEPT NOTES AND NOTED THAT THE SUCCESSFUL WAR GAME ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR CAME FROM THE N.W. WHAT THE JAPANESE USED TO ATTACK PEARL HARBOR WAS A COPY OF THE 1932 WAR GAME PLAN.
Making an attack against Pearl Harbor was unimaginable to many because the depth of Pearl Harbor was generally less than 40 ft (12 m). Such depths were widely believed insufficient for torpedo attack; [...]

Both the French Defense Ministry and the Navy released and then quickly deleted a news post entitled “Le SNA Saphir en entraînement avec l’US Navy au large de la Floride” (“The SNA Sapphire in training with the US Navy off the coast of Florida”) that praised the 34-year-old French nuclear submarine’s success in “sinking” the American aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt along with best part of its escort.

From Comment 1: Overlooked or unmentioned was the fact that anyone paying attention in summer of 1941, would have been aware that the government/military, started withdrawing dependent civilians from the entire Pacific in...JUNE...1941.
