On March 4, Breitbart News reported that Gabby Giffords was joining with Democrat lawmakers to push background checks for gun shows so that everyone would have to pass the same background check her attacker passed to get his handgun.

Numerous media outlets–Slate magazine, Mother Jones, MSNBC, Daily Mail, New York Daily News, and Huffington Post UK, among them–were shocked that Breitbart News would dare report this, but none refuted the fact the Jared Loughner passed a background check for the firearm he used to attack Giffords in January 2011.

Moreover, MSNBC actually admitted that Breitbart News’ report on Loughner passing background check was “accurate.” They also admitted that Breitbart News was “accurate” in reporting that Jerad and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard), James Holmes (Aurora theater), and Nidal Hasan (Fort Hood 2009) all passed background checks for the guns they used in crime as well.

The majority of the other outlets simply went apoplectic over Breitbart News’ willingness to point to the elephant in the room — namely, that in the midst of Giffords’ background check push, her own example demonstrated that background checks don’t stop criminals.

Mother Jones said the report made them want to “vomit,” the Daily Mail called the report “pathetic,” and the New York Daily News described the report as “sick.” These outlets all included the NRA in their criticism as well, because the NRA retweeted the Breitbart News story.

The goal of these media outlets is clear–in lieu of being able to disprove the report, they resorted to politically correct tactics aimed at shaming Breitbart News and the NRA into silence.

It’s not going to work.
