Want... Manufacturers of virtual reality equipment are likely to see a boost from improved experience and expanding content by the end of this year, a Chinese company told Shanghai's China Business News.

VR equipment and goggles made a splash at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in early March, even though such products have yet to make inroads into the consumer market, the newspaper said.

The discomfort created by wearing VR gear for long periods of time, poor picture quality and a lack of content have been the main factors holding back the development of such products, according to the newspaper.

In addition to Oculus, an early starter in the business, and several electronics companies such as Taiwanese handset maker HTC, the latest to join the game with the recent unveiling of its Vive VR helmet, about seven to eight companies in China are working on VR products, the newspaper said.

One of these Chinese companies is Virglass, which launched its first semi-VR products earlier this year. The company's products create 3D effects for videos from the user's smartphone, but have not been able to offer a fully immersive experience.

Once user experience of VR products improves, Virglass CEO Chen Chaoyang expects shipments to reach 1 million units. Chen further forecast that VR products will enter the consumer market in 2017, when available products are reduced to the size of a pair of goggles and content has become more appealing.

He also predicted that accelerated internet speeds will enable users of VR gear in different locations to interact in the virtual world by 2019.

In order to address the lack of content, Chen told the newspaper that Virglass is working with game developers and platforms such as Shengda to create 3D versions of existing games.

Companies in the sector believe that establishing a strong ecosystem of content, a model adopted by Amazon for the Kindle, will allow them to stop relying on sales of hardware, which is not a viable long-term strategy.

In contrast, Oculus has produced four short films, while HTC Vive has attracted interest from movie producers, the newspaper noted.

Besides games would be good to see via VR how organs in the body work, chemical reactions...
