Windows 10 will abandon the long-criticized Internet Explorer web browser, replacing it with a new “Project Spartan” brand, Microsoft has confirmed.

Microsoft's marketing chief confirmed at the company's ‘Convergence’ conference in Atlanta on Monday that Internet Explorer, the major old web browser brand, will only be used in enterprise compatibility with the new Windows 10, which will be offering a new way of browsing the internet, The Verge reported.

“We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan. We have to name the thing,” Chris Capossela said.

Microsoft's new web browser, for the moment being called “Project Spartan”, is currently being developed. Though it’s not available yet, it is said to have rejected the legacy of the IE code, thus becoming easier and faster in operation, with the best Javascript performance, according to some leaks.

The project is likely to have a final name with the word “Microsoft” in it, because market research on Google Chrome users showed that people find it appealing. It is expected to be introduced alongside with Windows 10 at the end of this year.

Internet Explorer has had a long history, doomed by a negative image, mocked by thousands of people on social media, as it failed to compete with rival Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers.

It seems MS is skipping making a Windows 9 and jumping to 10. Anybody know why? Am guessing it's partly because people are unhappy with 8, but no hypothesis seems to add up, and wicked pedia doesn't seem to offer any explanation in their article on 10. It does make this startling announcement: "upgrades to Windows 10 will be offered at no charge for consumer users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, including those using non- genuine copies."

What are opinions on 8 here? I got a computer with 7 on it just as 8 was being introduced because an OS at the end of its lifetime has spent years being fixed and debugged. So I have no experience of 8 at all. I thought I hated 7 and felt loyal to XP as did others I've talked to, but 7's been great and using an XP machine now feels like a trip back to 1642 AD.

Win 8 is very different from Win 7. It's designed more for tablets than PC's. It is remarkable that MS is willing to upgrade "non-genuine copies". Does that mean Win 10 will be subscription based? I'm guessing they will try to make it hack proof somehow, maybe by handshaking with MS's central server in order to run....

If so, maybe MS will succeed in alienating people enough to push a sufficient market share on to Linux.

When my olde XP box finally, totally, and completely died in '12, I pulled out the iMac OS-X box that I'd purchased a over a year earlier.

I'll never go back to MS, ever.

There are also rumors that they windows 10, will force updates down everyone's throat and we will have no control what so ever on what it updates, no refusal rights.

If it is true, it becomes pretty aggressive computing.

Now that is heady stuff. If big mfgrs are preloading Linux, isn't that a really big exciting deal? Has anybody tried taking it for a spin?

Should we all be going Linux or Mac since MS is so totalitarian? I have no problem with MS products, just hate the corporation and its political correctness on steroids (e.g. endless blockheaded suicidal racial do- goodery). Mac users call us numnuts for using IBM compatibles, maybe they'reright. Linux is supposedly the basis of Mac so maybe it's the uncut real stuff the whole time?

Also good news if this Windows 10 forced-update stuff is only during a trial period. It's delightful to kick MS around, but let's give credit where credit is due.

linux is free because liniux is open source... meaning people like you and I ,do the coding.. kinda like chiease crowdsourcing but including everyone. anyone can volumteer. they close their own back doors and make windows emulators that cant be trqcked so people can run windows programs on linux...above all they dislike innefficwncy and bugs... so they weed out things like microsoft coffee and other NSA imbeeded programs.

what they cant do is over come hardware. they only do software. things like the FM transmitter embeded on all ALL EVERY SINGLE USB connection... they have no control over that..... that is a recent disclosure everyone is still working to overcome.

I was at a Wal-Mark superstore today and they had a nice looking tablet with android on it. Samsung iirc. And I have heard you can get Dell to install Linux on a new box but I suspect it would be a process akin to pulling teeth. I should check and see though and not just speculate.

Eight Virtues

This Georgia-based business builds its own AMD-powered desktops and Intel- powered notebooks. On these you can either pick their customized Ubuntu Linux; or a variety of others. Their list of ready-to-go Linux distributions includes: CentOS, a Red Hat variant; Debian; Fedora; Mandriva; openSUSE; PCLinuxOS; Sabayon Linux; or my favorite desktop Linux: Linux Mint.

Eight Virtues prices tend to be a bit lower than other Linux-specific desktop resellers. Many of the others aim for power-users looking for high-end hardware. At Eight Virtues, you can get a basic box and then decide if you want to move up.

I can say that Kevin, the guy behind Eight Virtues, is one of the good guys and he has helped me when I had an issue with pclos. Same thing happened for the third time, couldn't get a screen (apparently something to do with resolutions getting screwed up on certain updates). Fortunately I had a Linux Mint disk and he told me what to do to save my files so I could install Mint. Hated to have to kick pclos to the curb, had used it for many years and mostly without issue but when the same darn thing happens three times and shouldn't have even happened once it is time to try something new.

Emperor Linux

Emperor has been in the Linux PC business since the 90s. These days they sell high-end Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad T and W laptops. On these, you get your choice of their own house-brand Emperor Linux, which is based on Fedora; Ubuntu; Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL); SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED); openSUSE; Fedora, Debian ; and SlackWare. They also offer not just the current versions, but older ones as well. At Emperor Linux, you really can have your Linux PC your way.

If you're new to Linux, I'd recommend you go with Ubuntu 11.04 or 10.10. Emperor offers both versions.

Los Alamos Computers

Los Alamos also specializes in high-end Linux-powered laptops and computers. They offer Lenovo ThinkCenter, ThinkStation, and ThinkPad T and X series laptops. On these, you can get a selection of Linux desktop distributions including Fedora 15; Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10; and the nothing but free-software Tisquel Linux distro.

Another interesting plus for Los Alamos is they sometimes offer clearance units. Since, from where I sit, you can't go wrong with a ThinkPad for your laptop, I'd keep an eye on this area if I were you. You just might be able to get a steal of a deal.

System76

It's a toss-up between system76 or ZaReason as to which is the better known of the Linux-specific desktop companies. Both are very good and they've earned their reputations as being outstanding computer vendors.

System76 builds their own laptops and desktops. They also offer servers. On all their platforms, they only offer Ubuntu 11.04. I've used system76 laptops myself. They tend to be very solid and well-made.

ZaReason

ZaReason also offers laptops, desktops, and servers that they've build themselves. Like system76 they offer a range of systems from the inexpensive to the Chimera. ZaReason calls this last one the most powerful Ubuntu laptop around. With its Intel i7 quad-core processor, USB 3.0 ports, and up to 12GBs of RAM, they're probably right.

On these machines, ZaReason offers Ubuntu and some of its variations such as Kubuntu, with its KDE desktop. In addition, the Calif.-based company offers Fedora and Mint on their hardware.

So which one should you shop at? I don't have a particular favorite. While I'm prejudiced towards ThinkPads--I love the TrackPoint--I've at least played with laptops from all these vendors and I've talked to their customers. Each of them has their fans. I recommend shopping around and finding what looks like the best deal for you.

I can also guarantee one thing: When you call any of these companies with a question, you'll get answers from people who know what they're talking about. That's more than I can say for any Windows PC vendor these days. Yes, I'm looking at you Dell!

Some of you may recognize that ubuntu is several versions higher than mentioned in this article. The article was written by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols for Linux and Open Source | July 29, 2011

Do you think that someday, some flavor of Linux will rise up and kick all others' ass?

Clearly it's a most excellent OS, but until they can make it so user-friendly for people like me, it's not going to really take off, imo.

Linux Mint is kicking ass and taking names now. You should try it. Do you know how to burn an iso onto a disk? If not here is a tutorial that should get you on the path of righteousness and rectitude shortly.

That will tell you how to burn the iso to a dvd file on your Mac computer. To get the iso file for Linux Mint, here is the url for that:

http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=184

That is for the latest version (17.1) 64 bit, KDE.

If you want to give it a shot I would be glad to help you any way I can. And I am sure there are people on here who know a lot more about it than I do.
