Most Americans learn early on that you can’t be president of the United States unless you’re born in America. But to the confusion of civics students everywhere, Ted Cruz’s presidential story begins in Canada.

The Texas senator, who officially announced his bid for president today at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, was born in Calgary, Canada in 1970. (Cruz even briefly mentioned Canada in his speech.)

So, why doesn't the Canadian-born US senator seem to be worried?

Let’s review:

According to the Constitution, a presidential candidate must be a “natural born citizen” of the United States.

While Cruz received U.S. citizenship through his American mother, he was a Canadian citizen by virtue of his birth, the Dallas Morning News discovered in 2013.

While some conservatives –and Donald Trump—have questioned Cruz’s presidential eligibility, and the Supreme Court has never weighed in on the subject, many legal experts believe his Canadian citizenship didn’t disqualify him from running for president. Both John McCain and George Romney ran for president, despite being born in the Panama Canal Zone and Mexico, respectively.

The most recent defense of Cruz’s eligibility came in a recent article in the Harvard Law Review, where two lawyers who worked in the Bush and Obama administrations argued that Cruz’s mother’s citizenship and his father’s status as a U.S. resident covered the Constitution’s requirement.

“Despite the happenstance of a birth across the border, there is no question that Senator Cruz has been a citizen from birth and is thus a ‘natural born Citizen’ within the meaning of the Constitution,” wrote Paul Clement, a Bush administration solicitor general and Neal Katyal, a former acting solicitor general in the Obama administration.

Cruz vowed to “renounce any Canadian citizenship” following the initial reporting in 2013.

“Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. Senator, I believe I should be only an American,” he said in a statement in 2013.

Cruz formally renounced his citizenship in an official "Canadian Renunciation Letter" on May 14, 2014.

He is not eligible.

Even if he is naturalized, his father was a Cuban citizen, and he only is eligible if BOTH parents at the time of his foreign birth, were American Citizens.

I am so sick to death of this nonsense, and we should not be putting up with it. It was bad enough when our current traitor took office, I can assure you that if you thought Obama was bad, Cruz will be far worse.

Because all of the legislation passed by a sitting administration is never for that one, it's for the next one to use against the people. What has Obama done?

We will have communism, full on communism by 2017 if this man is selected.

Agree with every word. Cruz is a sick, SICK individual -- don't forget, an audience of Christians rebelled against his Zionist mania and he bleated at them "If you won't stand with Israel, I won't stand with you!" In other words, a roundly hated foreign country smaller than Jew Jersey on the other side of the world takes precedence over voters! The parasite is invading the brain of the host and destroying every last vestige of mental independence, and attempting to hypnotize organisms it hasn't directly invaded yet.

That smarmy little speech of Cruz's they're playing over and over on hellavision is enough to give you permanent nausea. "I Believe In The Power Of Millions Of Courageous Conservatives", blah blah, that's what they all say and then forward the communist colors for 2, 4 or 8 years. They all claim to have fresh ideas to remedy amerika's suicide but none is willing to call for the only thing that will work -- a return to what used to work. "Clean cups, clean cups!" -- Mad Hatter.

Cruz is ugly as hell, too. I think it's time we started calling these people down on their visual hideosity since it's all such a beauty pageant.

Unless a candidate pledges unequivocal support for Israel, no chance at all of winning; only organized Jews in America, along with media they control, can offer a winning strategy in fund-raising and campaign organization. So give Cruz credit for not being a dummy.

No thanks. I give him discredit for being a degenerate, a cheap lay, a liar, a stinking hypocrite, a whore, a traitor, and a cannibal. You don't honestly think he's got brains for anything but self-aggrandizement, do you? That and convincing the masses he's WONNNDERFUL.

Actually, any foreign birth would be disqualifying even if both parents are American citizens at the time because foreign citizenship and/or foreign loyalty attachment could still be acquired that way.
