Can anyone tell me the formula I would use to solve this question.

If 2001.51 = 70% of X, what is X?

I know what X is, (2859.30) but if I didn't, and only had the 2001.51 number, what is the formula I would use to determine X?

And what area of math is this referred to as, (since I obviously need a course on it ;-) Thanks.

That's a 6th grade math problem.

It may be but would you have known the formula if it hadn't been for fformerlurker and esso?

;-)

I got one for you. If there are 50 jews loaning money to Tony, and tony is paying usurious 45% interest total, but 13 of the jews are charging him only 28%, what are the other jews charging him?

(Thanks in advance, please give the algebra equation in order for your reply to be proper.)

P = principal 50*P = principal from 50 jews

Total money in interest = 50 *.45 *P = 22.5*P

Money Paid to 13 Jews = 13 * P *.28 = 3.64 *P

So money which must be paid to other 37 jews = (22.5 - 3.64)P = 18.86P

So the interest rate charged by the other 37 jews is = 18.86P/37P = 50.97%

So that's your answer, your anti-Semitic scenario, notwithstanding.

Shoot it here.

Thanks Abe, you appear to be pretty good at algebra.

Fred, can you vouch for this answer?

Yes, 50.97% is correct. I used a different approach. I'm rusty too.

correct. I used a different approach. I'm rusty too.

Can you spell out your formula please? This is a learning session for me & it my be helpful in the future, thanks

Thanks for the link.

The question in #9 was quite different than the original which esso answered. Since fred said he used a different formula than abe, id like to see it.

Your second example of interest rates.

Let X=Interest rate charged by 37 others...the unknown.

13 of 50 charge .28 and 37 of 50 charge (X) then the total rate = .45 or 45%

13/50*(.28) + 37/50*(X) = .45

.26*(.28) + .74*(X) = .45

.0728 + .74X = .45

Subtract .0728 from both sides of the equation. Solve for X.

.74X = .3772

Now divide bofe sides by .74.

X = .3772/.74 = .5097...

X = 50.97%
