Want...

After European countries including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy announced their intention to join the China-proposed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the United States dropped its opposition and said it looked forward to cooperating with the new bank.

There are signs that President Barack Obama has adjusted his attitude toward the AIIB. The US government and the Asian Development Bank are beginning to accept the idea that China and the United States may be able to cooperate in supporting infrastructure development in Asia.

The development demonstrates that although there is obvious competition between China and the United States, they can find a positive way to get along with each other if they change their way of thinking.

As the world's two largest economies, the United States and China have maintained a complex relationship featuring both competition and cooperation.

Economic ties have always been a cornerstone of China-US relations. In 2014, bilateral trade exceeded US$520 billion, with broad prospects for economic cooperation between the two countries.

It should be noted that despite contradictions and tensions, China and the United States have not given up their pursuit of ways to avoid confrontation, strengthen cooperation and achieve a win-win.

Beijing's proposal for a "new model of major country relations" is aimed at allowing both sides to properly deal with their differences and preventing their competition from turning into a zero-sum game. Strengthening cooperation between China and the United States is not only consistent with the interests of both sides but also favorable to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

In September, President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States, his first since becoming the top leader of the country. This will be an important opportunity for China and the United States to promote their relations.

Poster Comment:

Competition between AIIB and Western banks likely will mean a fairer deal for borrowers.
