want... A Chinese research team has developed a robot whose movements can be controlled with just the human brain, reports the Chinese-language Changsha Evening News. The award-winning team of researchers at the National University of Defense Technology in Changsha, the capital of south-central China's Hunan province, recently tested the self-made brain-controlled robot, which was able to move forward and backwards and make flexible turns with its body through brainwaves sent from an electrode cap worn by the controller. According to Jiang Jun, a doctoral student in the team, the cap strengthens weak brainwaves before sending them back to their computers, which effectively reads the mind of the controller from the brainwave signals. "The computer will turn human thoughts into control instructions and send them back to the robot through wireless facility so that we can control it to finish the movements, including moving forward and turning left and right," he said. The experiment has been compared to the technology in the 2009 James Cameron film Avatar, in which a paraplegic marine was able to control an alien avatar on a distant planet with his brain. It is hoped that the breakthrough will eventually allow people to drive cars without using their hands and for handicapped people to control their wheelchairs with just their minds. It could also make daily life more convenient by enabling people to open doors and operate kitchen appliances without physical interaction. "We have combined human and cars through a brain-machine interface. On the one hand, we want to develop the preciseness of computer driving. On the other, we want to include human intelligence," said Liu Yadong, an associate professor at the university, who added that brain-controlled guns and vehicles could one day be applied to the battlefield. China will continue to explore the power of the brain in the future after the "China Brain Project" received approval from the Chinese State Council. The project's three main aims are to learn how to better understand the brain, protect the brain and simulate the brain.

Why commit yourself to a lifetime of boring, repetitive,sometimes tiring and hazardous tasks when you can build a machine that will do all of it for you.
That may be true. The computers, machines, and robots will do everything and we can be entertained watching videos and competitive events, eating, and f***in.
Let me throw a question in* just for fun. If all of humanity magically vanished from the earth tomorrow at 12 noon, what would be the main drawback to it? *Or as many would put it in this upside-down and backwards culture, "throw a question out".
Humans would not like the idea but I am not sure there is any disadvantage and would likely be an advantage for the majority of the remaining species. Nevertheless, if that happened before humans develop intelligent robots, travel to the stars may never be possible since the type of primitiveness required to develop a much higher technical society may not exist in the other species.
Any species that has no plans to lift off is dangerously close to outclassing humantelligence. God help any other planet that humans move to. God help it -- and may God have mercy on whoever or whatever's already living there.

Very true. More likely than not, we killed off Neanderthal and in more recent time, we murdered most and took the land from less technically advanced of our own species so humans would have zero compassion for other life forms. And, that may happen much sooner than we can imagine with our current technology since our current rockets would take 40,000 years to travel the 3 light years to our nearest neighbor star. However, with technology about to explode, we may acquire half light speed in less than 50 years.

Perhaps not. Recent DNA testing among peoples of the world strongly suggests interbreeding with Neanderthals -- Neanderthal remains are recent enough that DNA could be sampled. Interestingly, the peoples with the highest percentage of Neanderthal DNA are western Europeans. Be proud of your caveman heritage, you are survivors.
