BIRMINGHAM, England, May 7 (UPI) -- How long can intelligent life last? Can an advanced civilization persist for billions of years? A new study considers the implications of ancient star systems, their exoplanets and the search for extraterrestrial life.

Earlier this year, researchers announced the discovery of five exoplanets circling ancient star Kepler-444. At 11.2 billion years in age, the star system is 2.5 times older than our own solar system.

As scientists detailed in their recently published paper -- included in the January issue of the Astrophysical Journal -- each new discovery of an ancient habitable world increases the scope of the search for intelligent life forms outside our solar system. Ultimately, that search may answer the question as to whether advanced civilization can be sustained for long periods of time.

As of now, there isn't enough information to answer such questions with any certainty. Only a few other star systems as old as Kepler-444 have been found and studied.

"If intelligent life develops in a system as old as this one, would it still exist or would they extinguish themselves?" Tiago Campante, who led the recent research into Kepler-444, told Astrobiology Magazine.

Any answer, Campante says, would be pure speculation.

Campante is an astroseismologist at the University of Birmingham, in England. Astroseismology is the study of the inner pulsations of stars.

The new research revealed Kepler-444 and its surroundings to be rich in what are called alpha elements -- silicon, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. These were the first elements to be scattered throughout the universe when the earliest stars died and exploded.

It's been assumed that most rocky planets are rich with iron. But the abundance of alpha elements in the system suggests habitable exoplanets can be made of a wider variety of materials than previously considered -- and that these planets can form in a variety of ways. The realization is yet another reason for scientists to believe there are many more habitable exoplanets out there.

Or, in other words, the search continues.

EXTREME CYNICISM WARNING: do not read this unless ready to fall to as low an opinion of humankind as NN's.

Serious questions: how intelligent is this life, really, and what right does it have to go on even one day more? How much actual living is this "life" doing?

Of course the eggheads equate intelligent life with homo sapiens -- "advanced civilization", no less! -- never noticing that unlike us, other species are still in touch with their basic instincts.

Bees, for instance, are absolutely, airtightly, 111% percent dedicated to the real, not imaginary, care and preparation of the next generation. Any creature that comes along trying to mess with the hive or comb, adult bees will give their lives in any numbers necessary to stop it.

With humans, on the other hand, the womb is one of the most dangerous places to be. Those that manage to get born are subject to enslavement, sexual abuse, and even parking in soulless institutions for 1/3 of their waking hours. Once of age, the adults actually send their young afar to die "defending" them against threats positively known to be fake, or even better, to "defend" subspecies other than their own from each other!

Baby bees are fed naturally pure and organic honey, but to try and find unpolluted, unadulterated food given to human young is complicated. It's almost as if humans have worked overtime to destroy its nutritional value.

Oh yes -- for the crowning touch, "advanced civilization" is doing its best to kill off the bee community and most others it can get its hands on. No, no, it gets better! Humans are actually talking about taking their act on the road through the galaxy and universe because of what they've done to their present planetary home. This they consider the ultimate expression of their genius and superiority, but would seem be the best possible indicium of a species that's managing the lowest possible IQ of all life forms, beating even.........what?

Amoebas? Lichens? FLESH-EATING BACTERIA? Nope, they're 100% dedicated to healthy propagation too.

Shall I go on? Damn, I'm good at it! 0:-)
