World's largest retailer Walmart launched its first O2O service platform in China, along with a smartphone app providing customers with delivery service and allowing them to pick up goods in any Walmart stores after shopping through the mobile app and online payment systems, reports Beijing-based news agency Caixin Online. The Online-to-offline (O2O) service platform is an extension operation in addition to the brick-and-mortar stores. It is Walmart China's first strategic move, marking an important milestone for the company's operation in the Chinese retail marker, said Walmart China president and CEO Sean Clarke at the launch event on May 26 in Shenzhen. The O2O service platform will be first rolled out in Shenzhen where most Walmart stores in China are located. Customers will be able to choose goods from the 23 stores in Shenzhen through the platform after downloading the Walmart app. If the purchase is worth 188 yuan (US$30) or more, customers will be provided free delivery or they can pick up the goods in any of the stores. In the early stages, the goods on the platform will include fresh food, dried foods, personal care goods and cosmetics, cleaning products, and others coming to a total of over 10,000 items. After getting feedback from Shenzhen consumers, the platform will be introduced to other cities in the near future. The O2O platform is for smartphone users only and will not have a PC version in the future given that more than 55% of Chinese consumers shop and pay through mobile devices whereas only 19% of consumers do so in the US, according to the company's data. The company thus focuses their sales strategy on smartphones and other mobile devices as the global retail giant targets the growing number of Chinese mobile shoppers. Walmart teamed up with China's e-commerce giant Alibaba two weeks ago, allowing customers to pay with Alipay Wallet, the mobile app of Alibaba's online payment unit Alipay. Twenty-five of its stores in southern China have scanners to read barcodes in the app, with the payment then taken in seconds. The retailer owns more than 410 outlets across China. Its customers shrank by 5.7% year-on-year in 2014. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
