Now, one man has offered himself to be experimented on to provide us with an open and honest look at the consequences of eating this way. Tom Spector, a genetics student at the University of Aberystwyth, was recruited by his father, Tim Spector processor of genetic epidemiology at Kings College in London, to eat only McDonalds food for 10 days. During this time, the only foods Tom was allowed to have was either a Big Mac or chicken nuggets, fries and a Coke. For the first 3 days, Tom reported feeling quite normal. However, after that, he began to note that he began to feel sluggish. His friends observed that his skin began to take on a greyish pallor. Tom says he felt even worse for the remainder of the time, and couldnt wait to have fresh produce when the experiment was over. More importantly, throughout this period, samples of Toms stool were being sent out to several different labs to assess measure his bacteria. Final results from the British Gut Project and Cornell University painted a grave picture of devastation to his gut microbes. Over 1400 types of bacteria species were destroyed just over several days, amounting to a loss of approximately 40% of his total bacteria. This was a huge concern as a loss of this nature can lead rapidly to serious health issues including obesity, diabetes and immunity issues. Perhaps the most concerning thing of all is that two weeks after the experiment had ended, Toms microbiome had not recovered, alluding to the fact that it is much easier to destroy your health than to rebuild it. The moral of Toms story is, feed your gut bacteria with the foods they love, and they will reward you by producing essential nutrients that your body needs and keeping you in good health. What do they like to eat? Fruits and vegetables and other high fiber plant foods. Poster Comment: I'm a junk food junkie. Good Lord have pity on me.
