ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 9 (UPI) -- A duckling trapped on the embankment of a pond at a Netherlands Zoo escaped with a little help from its friends -- a pair of hippopotamuses.

A visitor to the Rotterdam Zoo -- locally known as the Diergaarde Blijdorp -- filmed the small duck repeatedly attempting to jump from the embankment to the shore, but falling short of making it over a short barrier.

The footage, posted to YouTube, shows the duckling is soon joined by a pair of hippos, which appear to startle the bird as it attempts to avoid the much larger animals.

However, rather than make a meal out of the duckling, the hippos use their snouts to the give the baby duck a boost and help it to reach the shore and reunite with its mother

Poster Comment:

Shows that hippos have cognitive ability. Would make interesting pets if weren't so big.

That's so neat.

Truth is still truth even if no one believes it. A lie is still a lie even if everyone believes it.

Animals are better than people, even though lots of people would helped the duck too. It's true critters fight and kill each other, but none has ever invented an A-bomb or bought a Michael Jackson record.

"After climbing a tree in the middle of the Yukon forest, I looked into a squirrel’s nest and found a pup that clearly did not belong there. It was older and larger than the others in the litter. My research team and I collected DNA from the whole litter and later, back at the genetics laboratory, the mystery was solved: We determined that the larger pup had been adopted by an older sister after its mother had been killed by a predator." http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/the_kindness_of_squirrels

"I collected DNA from the whole litter" -- I'm afraid to ask.
