Don't cats try to suck the life breath out of babies and murder them,??? LoL, that's the story I heard as a kid, anyway. Sure, they look clever and innocent but they're just waiting for the right moment!!

Cat Myth: Cats Steal the Breath From Babies

No, cats are not baby killers. They don’t steal anyone’s breath and they’ree not plotting to injure your sleeping infant. This ridiculous myth probably started because some cats enjoyed curling up next to the warmth of babies. A cat may even have sniffed the baby’s mouth due to the scent of milk on the breath and that act probably set off alarm bells in the minds of panicked parents.

What we now know of as SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) may have been blamed on cats who enjoyed sharing a nap with an infant.

Because infants can’t turn to get away from objects, it’s not safe to have ANYTHING in the crib or bassinet with the baby and that includes a blanket, toy or stuffed animal. So for safety, keep your cat out of the crib but certainly allow your cat to enjoy being close to your baby at other times.

There are crib tents available that make it easy to keep the cat out of the crib.

No one can properly claim that cats "try" anything. However, here is recent article that may support your post:

BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A study links a parasite in cat stools to an increased risk of humans developing a mental illness. Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine researchers found that long-term exposure during childhood could lead to a diagnosis of serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Only infected cats can spread the parasite. Veterinarians say the study should not keep children from touching or hugging family pets because the risk comes from direct contact with stool.

“These will be children who are actually playing with a cat’s feces, touching their face after playing with cat feces, that are going to be exposed,” said Dr. Amy Hinc, Cosmic Cat Veterinary Clinic.

She specializes in treating cats and says to be practical, not petrified, when it comes to your favorite feline.

“Just some basic hygiene of hand washing, keeping children away from the litter pans or away from areas outdoor cats might be using as a litter pan, you can avoid the situation all together,” said Dr. Hinc.

The exposure comes from toxoplasma gondii, found in cats. The parasite can lead to toxoplasmosis, which can impact people with weakened immune systems.

“In this case they are worried about it traveling to the brain and causing damage there,” said the veterinarian.

Studies show the parasite has the changed the way the brain of a mice works.

“Mice who are affected with the protozoan are no longer afraid of cat smells, so they may walk to up a cat and that means the cat catches the mouse,” said Dr. Hinc. “It actually does change how a mouse behaves. If it can change how a mouse behaves, you have to wonder.”
