Want

Ford has released a survey saying 59% of Chinese drivers use social networking tools while driving, the highest proportion in the Asia-Pacific region, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

The Ford survey said 59% of Chinese drivers are using social media apps like WeChat, while 31% are taking selfies and reading Weibo. The company warned of the danger of doing so, pointing out that a moving vehicle covers a significant distance in every second that a driver's eyes are not on the road.

Drivers in the Asia-Pacific region commonly get distracted while eating snacks, texting, taking selfies, or using social networking tools while driving, the survey said. It claimed drivers in Philippines said they were on Facebook while behind the wheel, while divers in Thailand admitted to logging into LINE or other messaging tools while driving.

Poster Comment:

Seems like "distracted" driving not illegal in China. Could be Chinese multi-taskers not as slow witted as those in the West who have to be discouraged with penalties to avoid dual activities. Before distracted driving laws came into effect I would eat soup or cereal using my lap to keep the steering wheel straight. Anyone multi-tasking is usually on a higher level of alertness than one daydreaming with both hands on the wheel.

I got ticketed after my wife called me on 7/1/08, the first day that absurd law took effect. It was the first time a cop ever used his siren to pull me over, lol. I guess that meant it was a grave matter.

These people are so full of shit their eyes are brown. Just like schwarzeneggers wife was photographed yapping on her phone while driving and her own hubby signed it into law. To claim that no one can safely do 2 things while driving is paranoid & retarded.

The cop frantically asked me "didn't you see the news? You don't have a bluetooth???"

I told him govt has no valid right to dictate such things, that its a bogus law, & that ill beat it in court, which I did.

My storys the #1 result on google for almost 10 years now and gets countless visits endlessly.

No one can ever stop folks from using the phones, they'll never stop. Ever.

PS Remember, half the populace is of below average intelligence.

IMO a good 75% if not more, are mentally incapable of driving well and considerately and according to road protocols/laws while talking on a phone much less a hand-held one.

That's what about a half-million miles of driving experience, or more, tells me.

Irrelevant IMO. Most that I see are white americans.

The bottom line is that if you're driving 100% of your focus should be on that. Period.

One person on a phone, convenient for them perhaps, creates an inconvenience for everyone else on the roads.

ill play the devils advocate here so to speak,.

It's already been admitted in state reports that cell phone/texting laws do not reduce texting. I've been meaning to get around to doing an article on the report but its quite extensive report so suffice for now that what I say is true.

They're not saying that texting and driving is good, but rather that texting laws do not have any effect. Remember, this is not me saying this, its the state admitting it.

Distracted driving has always been illegal long before cell phones existed. These laws are for revenue. In CA, the CA superior court upheld a victory by a defendant who was ticketed while using his hand held GPS. the court tossed his conviction because the law doesn't mention GPS.

phones are not just phones anymore, they are MP3 players, recorders, cameras, GPS , etc.

So if the state contention is that having anything in your hand is 'BOOGA BOOGA SCARY! ILLEGAL! DEATH CAUSING!

Then Why TF do cars have volume controls on the radio? why are there cupholders? ashtrays? the drink, cigarette, or cd player, your hand must be on those things. Should that be forbidden too? after all, the coffee is HAND HELD!

but we're told 'NO HAND HELD' THINGS, right?

I think this nanny state has gone way, way too far peering into peoples cars trying to dictate what they wear (seatbelt) what they touch, who or how they talk. These laws don't help anything, admittedly, and are only for revenue,. If someone is swerving that's ALREADY illegal, and always has been, regardless of what theyre doing (eating, putting on makeup, reading, etc)

And finally, all that aside, I got news for everyone. No one or nothing will ever stop people from using their devices while driving. I'm not praising that or saying its good or bad, I'm simply stating a fact. People will never stop using their phones while driving any more than they will stop having sex or eating ice cream. never. the genie is out of the bottle.

i see truckers using hand helds all day long, and that was I think passed as a federal crime with a $1000+ penalty, if im not mistaken, some years ago after a trucker killed a bunch of people in a wreck where he was using his phone. The consequences are steep, yet are no deterrent. Because the mentality is, "it (a wreck) won't happen to me."

This applies to cars, trucks, everyone.

So my best solution is to be alert and careful, lol.

I basically agree. Certainly since cars have had full-fledged stereos, it's academic. All these toys are sure to be precipitating accidents, but I think an overwhelming majority of the population would -- rightly or wrongly -- say it's better with the stuff than without it.
