Somehow flags as symbols can be both patriotic and divisive. I was in stationed in Germany (west) years ago. The swastika was a banned symbol IIRC. Went to a friend's home for coffee and snacks - they had fashioned in their wallpaper a swastika next to their wood stove. It was a soft pattern, but once you saw it you knew it was there. I know, I didn't answer your question.

Confederate President Jefferson Davis not only envisioned black confederate veterans but also envisioned them receiving bounty lands for their service. There would have been no future for slavery once the armed black CSA veterans came home after the war. ^^^^the above an excerpt from Amy M. Wrobel's excellent commentary linked below. Two acts of Congress were passed during the Civil War, One in 1864 (13 Stat. 11) and one in 1866 (14 Stat. 321) which allowed slave owners whose slaves enlisted or were drafted into the Union military to file a claim against the Federal Government for loss of the slave's services. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 freed slaves in the Southern or 'rebellious' states but in border-states that were loyal to the Union, slavery continued to be legal. If a slave ran away to join the military and the owner knew where and when he joined, the owner could file a compensation claim as long as he or she was loyal to the Union. There were also free blacks who owned slaves. And something else you might not know, it was the Africans who sold their own people into slavery. Union Generals Grant and Sherman were slave owners as well. Confederate Generals Jackson and Lee were not.

Good on you, Fred. Yankee isn't latitude; it's attitude. I have a friend here in the South who is originally from NYC. He says that George Wallace was very warmly received there when he ran for president in 1968. Choruses of Dixie, hearty cheers, and waving Confederate Battle Flags. That must have been a sight. Beck is mostly off the wall. Every once in awhile he will get it right. Never cared for the professional showman myself. This is an original 1857 Map of the United States Showing the Free and Slave States. The Dark green states are the free states. The light green are the free "Territories", which were not yet states. The Red States were Slave Importing States, and the Pink States Were Slave States that Exported Slaves. Part of the dispute which helped trigger the Civil War was how to dispose of the territories . . . would they join the union as Slave or Free? The answer to this would tip the balance of power in the Congress, which is what made it such a difficult issue. Blacks, both free and slave, fought for the Confederacy re: Slave states ..
