Experts said the project is significant because it is a major milestone of China-Russia energy cooperation and the last of four key channels through which China imports energy. The four channels, developed to ensure China's energy security, consist of a sea channel involving the Strait of Malacca and South China Sea through which crude oil and liquefied natural gas are shipped to China and three land channelsbetween China and Russia, China and Central Asia, and China and Myanmar. The China-Russia natural gas pipeline, which spans 3,986 kilometers from gas fields in Russia's Far East to Shanghai, will transport 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia to China. The construction on the Russian section of the East Route pipeline began in September 2014. Zhang said the pipeline will enable both countries to diversify their energy strategies and ensure their energy security. He urged the two sides to extend their long-term cooperation on oil, natural gas development and pipelines, and the integration of coal mining, power generation and power transmission. Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said via teleconference that the China-Russia East Route natural gas pipeline, one of the world's largest energy projects, symbolizes the high level of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries. He said the gas pipeline will boost economic and social development and the raise the living standards of the people in the region along the route.
