Let's make the Confederate flag a hate crime: It is the American swastika and we should recoil it from it in horrorSupporters of keeping the Confederate battle flag flying at a Confederate monument at the South Carolina Statehouse wave flags during a rally in front of the statehouse in Columbia, S.C. (Credit: AP Photo/Bruce Smith)

Early Thursday morning, the State House of South Carolina voted to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the State Capitol. Gov. Nikki Haley has pledged to sign the bill immediately, and the flag may come down as soon as today.

Frederick Douglass, the former slave who escaped to freedom, and became a major abolitionist and civil rights leader a century and a half ago, foresaw this day.  But he foresaw, too, that it would be a long time coming.

Speaking in Boston just days before the South surrendered at the end of the Civil War, Douglass warned that the North’s victory would not mean that that war had truly ended: “That enmity will not die out in a year, will not die out in an age,” he predicted.

As a former southerner himself, Douglass knew just how deep allegiance to the Southern slave-holding culture went. He declared:

“I believe that when the tall heads of this Rebellion shall have been swept down, you will see those traitors, handing down, from sire to son, the same malignant spirit which they have manifested, and which they are now exhibiting, with malicious hearts, broad blades, and bloody hands in the field, against our sons and brothers.”

Six years later, in 1871, Douglass wrote that,  “A rebellion is upon our hands to-day far more difficult to deal with than that suppressed, but not annihilated, in 1865.” He was speaking of the rising wave of mob violence and terrorism directed against African Americans all across the region. Like a “pestilence,” Douglass observed, “this last form of the rebellion – covert, insidious, secret, striking in the darkness of night, while assuming spotless robes of loyalty in the day – is far more difficult to deal with than an open foe.”

Has the age of “enmity” finally ended? Has the “malignant spirit” finally died away? Has the “pestilence” finally abated?

The answer to all of these questions is “no.” The hateful actions of Dylann Roof remind of us of that. So do the white supremacist websites Roof found appealing. So do the many Confederate flags displayed in places across the South — and beyond — today, emblazoning T-shirts, affixed to car bumpers, and worn as lapel pins in business suits.

You Might Also Like

The heritage these flags stand for was a bloody war initiated by the South. Those Southerners who fired the first shots to attack U.S. troops at Fort Sumter – just a mile or two from the church where Roof gunned down nine black worshippers – aimed not only to “defend” slavery, but to promote slavery’s spread across the nation, especially in the West.  The defeat of the South was the defeat of the slavery system.

That defeat is still mourned by many sympathizers with the Confederate cause across the nation, who have somehow forgotten that the Lost Cause was the cause of slavery. To them, the Confederate flag is an innocent symbol, a symbol that honors the Confederate dead and preserves the memory of their gallantry and fighting spirit.

To black Americans, meanwhile, these flags send a clear, painful, and frightening message:You don’t belong here. By being here, you are in danger. This nation is not for you.  It was no coincidence that those who opposed the civil rights movement for desegregation and integration across America began to resurrect the use of the flag in the 1950s and 1960s.

Americans who refuse to acknowledge the connection between the Confederate flag and the horrors of slavery and white supremacy are still in the grip of a “malignant spirit” handed down from generation to generation from 1865 to this day.

It is a fine thing that the Confederate flag will no longer fly above the South Carolina state capitol. But displaying the Confederate flag anywhere is, at bottom, an act of hate. It should be recognized as such, and punished as a hate crime.

Given the millions who suffered under the whip of slave masters, and all the families separated as slave traders sold sons and daughters away from their parents, and wives away from their husbands, All Americans should recoil from the Confederate flag with the same horror we feel for the Nazi swastika.

That, I feel confident, is what Frederick Douglass would think.

Even Liberalian but good but Jueish Brasscheck is deriding the anti-flag hoopla.

<From: "Brasscheck TV" Subject: The Confederate flag, really?

=================== BrasscheckTV Report ===================

Here's how brain dead this country has become.

Police around the country are engaged in a wave of shooting and brutalizing unarmed people...

Whole towns and cities pay their bills by arresting and fining people and then hitting them with huge penalties and in some cases jailing them for not paying... for total non-crimes...

Obama, the Criminal in Chief, just sold out the nation with another "screw the US worker and consumer" trade bill...

And what do we do?

Stand around in a circle, sing "Kumbaya" and tearfully ban the Confederate flag.

Really?

How about leaving that rag alone and dealing with real problems - and real history.

A little historical perspective on America's first Federal dictator.

Hate Crime? Professor calls for arresting Americans who display Confederate flag

confederateflagserfs up/Flickr

Leftist Professor wants citizens put in jail for displaying flag

By Alex Thomas

(INTELLIHUB) — In the weeks since the horrific mass shooting at a historic black church in South Carolina that killed nine people there has been an increasingly Orwellian move to remove and ban all things connected to the Civil War South.

From removing the Confederate flag from state grounds to possibly renaming thousands of parks, roads, and landmarks across the country, the idea of erasing and sometimes rewriting history has swept the nation.

While most can agree that removing a flag that many African-Americans see as a symbol of hate and oppression is the right thing to do, the hard left isn’t stopping there and has now crossed the line into straight up authoritarian thought police.

In a piece published by the clickbait rag Salon.com, Nick Bromell, a professor of American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, calls for a new law that would classify displaying the Confederate flag a hate crime.

“It is a fine thing that the Confederate flag will no longer fly above the South Carolina state capitol,” wrote Bromell. “But displaying the Confederate flag anywhere is, at bottom, an act of hate. It should be recognized as such, and punished as a hate crime.”

That’s right, the new “free and equal” America imagined by the left will apparently include citizens being sent to jail for displaying a piece of history.

The call for classifying displaying the Confederate flag anywhere as a hate crime and thus having police arrest Americans for displaying a piece of cloth comes at a time where overall extreme political correctness has erupted across the country.

In article written by Lilly Dane for the Daily Sheeple and published on Intellihub News, Dane details how out of control political correctness has become and how it is being used by those on the left as a sort of historical revisionism to advance their agenda.

“Is this call to remove a flag that has existed for 150 years an inane attempt to erase some of America’s history – out of sight, out of mind? Historical revisionism is a method used to alter the way history is viewed. It is often employed to cause people to accept a change in public policy.

There are three ways that goal is typically attained:

  1. Under-emphasizing or ignoring the aspects of American history they deem to be politically incorrect and overemphasizing those portions they find acceptable.
  2. Vilifying the historical figures who embraced a position they reject.
  3. Concocting the appearance of widespread historical approval for the social policy they are attempting to advance. (source)

We see this sanitized, diluted history in public school textbooks.

Isn’t this what dictators and communists do? Winston Smith, the main character in George Orwell’s novel 1984, is a historical revisionist. The novel is a classic example of how regimes distort history to suit political purpose and is based on Communist policies in Russia.”

As I previously noted, while most Americans can understand why getting rid of the Confederate flag on governmental property is the right thing to do, the idea that we should then go further and start to label displaying certain political beliefs as illegal hate crimes is an extremely slippery slope towards full-scale tyranny controlled by a sort of academic thought police.

If displaying a flag is deemed illegal by the government what is next? Will disagreeing with a minorities political beliefs also be considered hateful? Will displaying your happiness over your straight marriage be considered hateful to the gay community?

Where does it end?

I hate to say it, but Taxachusetts is totally EFFED up. TOTALLY. It's a hole from which stuff like this shoots without letup. Any state that would not only produce the Kennedys but send the Hero of Chappaquiddick to Washington over and over, what can you say about it?

Back to you, Professor --

The Yankee Problem in America
http://archive.lewrockwell.com/wilson/wilson12.html

When Washington Irving, whose family were among the early Anglo-Dutch settlers of New York, wrote the story about the "Headless Horseman," he was ridiculing Yankees. The prig Ichabod Crane had come over from Connecticut and made himself a nuisance. So a young man (New York young men were then normal young men rather than Yankees) played a trick on him and sent him fleeing back to Yankeeland where he belonged. James Fenimore Cooper, of another early New York family, felt the same way about New Englanders who appear unfavorably in his writings. Yet another New York writer, James Kirke Paulding (among many others) wrote a book defending the South and attacking abolitionists. It is not unreasonable to conclude that in Moby Dick, the New York Democrat Herman Melville modeled the fanatical Captain Ahab on the Yankee abolitionist. In fact, the term "Yankee" appears to originate in some mingling of Dutch and Indian words, to designate New Englanders. Obviously, both the Dutch New Yorkers and the Native Americans recognized them as "different."

Young Abe Lincoln amused his neighbors in southern Indiana and Illinois, nearly all of whom, like his own family, had come from the South, with "Yankee jokes," stories making fun of dishonest peddlers from New England. They were the most popular stories in his repertoire, except for the dirty ones.

Right into the war, Northerners opposed to the conquest of the South blamed the conflict on fanatical New Englanders out for power and plunder, not on the good Americans in the South who had been provoked beyond bearing.

Many people, and not only in the South, thought that Southerners, according to their nature, had been loyal to the Union, had served it, fought and sacrificed for it as long as they could. New Englanders, according to their nature, had always been grasping for themselves while proclaiming their righteousness and superiority......

What a pant load. The CF has been loaded into the Progressive breech for years and it merely took the actions of Storm, coupled with a spineless Republican party, to tear it down. The string of victories they've had of late is disheartening. I hope the Rs keep peeing on Trump and he runs 3rd party (yeah, he isn't perfect but he gets illegals perfect).
