GOP presidential candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Thursday he believes military leaders should decide whether to allow transgender individuals to serve in the U.S. military, and he will abide by that decision.
[The Pentagon] should call the shots as it relates to the Armed Forces of the United States, and I think the first priority ought to be the morale of the troops, Bush said when Yahoo News asked about him about the Pentagons decision to consider allowing transgendered people to serve in the military.
So if you can accommodate people who are transgendered and deal with making sure the militarys comfortable with this and making sure that the overriding principle ought to be how do we create the highest morale for the greatest fighting force the worlds ever seen
and if you can accommodate those two concerns, then fine.
In a statement issued on July 13, Defense Secretary Ash Carter called the current policy banning transgender individuals from serving in the U.S. military outdated.
The Defense Department's current regulations regarding transgender service members are outdated and are causing uncertainty that distracts commanders from our core missions, Carter said in the statement.
At a time when our troops have learned from experience that the most important qualification for service members should be whether they're able and willing to do their job, our officers and enlisted personnel are faced with certain rules that tell them the opposite, he said.
Moreover, we have transgender soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines - real, patriotic Americans - who I know are being hurt by an outdated, confusing, inconsistent approach that's contrary to our value of service and individual merit, Carter said.
Carter announced he was issuing two directives, one to create a working group to study the issue over the next six months and the second to review dismissal orders of any personnel diagnosed with gender dysphoria or who identify as transgender.
