Vitamin K2 proven effective in rheumatoid arthritis study size Many of us have seen the unfortunate ramifications of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in our own families, particularly in members of the older generations. The impact RA has on mobility and function can be significant and compromising to one's lifestyle, and also very painful as well. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the entire body, but especially the joints. There is abundant evidence that RA is an autoimmune reaction, wherein an assortment of genetic, dietary, and environmental factors contribute to this disease and its manifestations. Vitamin K2 is a member of the "K family", and K2 is derived primarily from bacteria. MK-7 (menaquinone-7) is the most important commercial form of vitamin K2, and clinical studies have documented the long-term effect of 180 mcg (micrograms) of MK-7 in improving bone density and in promoting overall bone health. Based upon pre-clinical studies showing that another form of vitamin K2 (MK-4 a synthetic version of K2) blocked the development of arthritis in an experimental animal model of RA, it was suggested that MK-4 might offer benefit in human applications. In human studies following, it was shown that MK-4 supplementation reduced RA disease activity associated with a marked decrease in clinical and biochemical markers. However, since MK-7 has greater bioavailability than MK-4 after oral administration,, researchers were curious if even better results might be attained with MK-7. THE STUDY To clarify the therapeutic role of MK-7 in RA patients with different stages of the disease, 84 RA patients were enrolled in a randomized clinical trial. The patients were divided into MK-7 treated group (n=42) and a control group (n=42), whereby MK-7 capsules were administered in a dose of 100 mcg/day for three months in the first group without changing any other medications. To determine the potential benefits with MK-7, the clinical and biochemical markers on RA patients treated with MK-7 and in the control group were assessed before (and after) the trial study. For the MK-7 treated group, the results showed a statistically significant decrease in the levels of the following markers of inflammation: Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) RA 'disease activity score' (assessing 28 joints) C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP-3) In addition, MK-7 also increased the level of the active form of osteocalcin, an important marker of bone health. The benefits noted with MK-7 were directly related to increased levels of MK-7 in the blood. At present, conventional treatment of RA has been primarily in managing the disease and suppressing its symptoms. But with the results of this limited trial study, MK-7 represents a promising new agent for RA in combination therapy with other disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs presently being administered.** Click on the link below to read the short abstract about this studies findings.
