BEIRUT: Israel has deployed its Iron Dome anti-missile system near Lebanons southern border, an Israeli military officer has said. Col. Yoni Saada Marom, commander of Israels Active Defense Air Wing, told Fox News that the move comes to placate Israeli fears that the recently sealed Iranian nuclear deal will see bolstered Iranian support to Hezbollah. The news emerges two days after a suspected Israeli drone attacked a military base belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command on Lebanons eastern border. On the same day, an Israeli drone attacked a vehicle belonging to a Damascus-allied militia group in south Syrias Golan Heights, killing three fighters. Marom claimed that Hezbollah and other organizations close to the border pose a potentially heightened threat to Israel due the recent nuclear deal with Iran. Now we are dealing with the challenges and scenarios that we think the enemies from the north will bring. One of the scenarios could be that, like Hamas, they [Hezbollah] will try and challenge us with a variety of threats simultaneously which is a great challenge but we are developing our concepts of operation, the colonel said. Marom revealed that more batteries are now operational near Lebanons border and additional soldiers have been trained to operate to the sophisticated systems. As a military commander I cannot deal with their [Hezbollahs] intentions, Marom said. They can do whatever they choose to do, and I, as a defender, need to be ready for that. While not making details public, Hezbollah has said its military capabilities have been significantly boosted since Israels 2006 war against Lebanon. Poster Comment: Each Iron Dome battery costs about $100 million; Israel currently has nine batteries. And each Iron Dome Tamir missile that Israel fires and usually two are sent up to intercept each descending rocket costs at least $50,000. Each rocket Hamas fires costs $500 to $1,000 to produce.Aug 21, 2014 Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
