(CNSNews.com) - In the first Republican presidential debate, Ohio Gov. John Kasich said Thursday that if one of his daughters were gay, he would love and accept her, because thats what were taught when we have strong faith, even admitting that he attended the gay marriage ceremony of a friend.
The court has ruled, and I said well accept it, and guess what? I just went to a wedding of a friend of mine who happens to be gay, Kasich said. Because somebody doesnt think the way I do doesnt mean I cant care about them or cant love them. So if one of my daughters happened to be that, of course I would love them, and I would accept them, because you know what, thats what were taught when we have strong faith.
Kasich was asked how he would explain his position on same-sex marriage to a son or daughter who was gay or lesbian.Kasich said hes an old-fashioned person and believes in traditional marriage.
Issues like that are planted to divide us, Kasich said. I think the simple fact of the matter is and this is where I would agree with Jeb, and Ive been saying it all along - we need to give everybody a chance, treat everybody with respect, and let them share in this great American dream that we have, Megyn.
So look, Im gonna love my daughters. Im gonna love them no matter what they do, because you know what? God gives me unconditional love. Im gonna give it to my family, and my friends and the people around me, he added.
