China is among the countries that has applied 3D printing technology to precision health care, drawing considerable attention within the medical sector, Shanghai's China Business News reports.

By taking advantage of 3D printing technology, doctors are able to simulate a surgical process before a surgery starts, says Liu Jinfen, the director of the cardiac surgery department at Shanghai Children's Medical Center, according to the report.

3D printing technology is expected to cut operating times because of the preparation done ahead of the procedure. It has also increased the chances of heart surgery being successful, Liu said.

The Shanghai Children's Medical Center has teamed up with Belgium-based 3D printing software developer Materialise to open a pediatric-specific 3D digital medical research facility in the Chinese medical center.

The China Business News said the joint project aims to integrate 3D digital medical research with 3D printing technology, and use the combination in a wide range of applications, such as pediatric medical imaging, digital modeling, 3D fabrication and other clinical needs.

Among the advantages of the technology is that doctors can use a model of a patient's heart created by 3D printing to explain the operation to the patient in detail and inform them of the possible risks of the procedure.

Doctors can also develop a better understanding of the structure of the hearts they will operate on and be able to more accurately measure the blood flow into the heart before surgery.

Materialise began its efforts to explore the China market in 2005. Kim Francois, head of Materialise's China operations, said his company is one of several 3D printing technology developers that have eyed the growing medical care market in China.

In the report, Francois said 3D medical care services involve human tissues and artificial materials and getting these materials to work together in a printed organ for implant is a major challenge.

3D printing technology has been largely used in dental care and orthopedics, which is focused on bone repairs, the report said. Human cell creation and other human tissue production through 3D printing technology still require further research and development efforts, it added.

The China Food and Drug Administration is expected to issue permits to import 3D printing equipment in the near future to enhance domestic medical care services, the China Business News said.

The report said 3D printing technology has been categorized as part of China's precision medicine development and part of the government's push toward smart manufacturing.

If Chinese chemists can come up with a tooth binding compound which adheres strongly to a damaged tooth after printing they'll have a medical tourism winner.
