A federal judge has ordered a Kentucky county clerk to jail Thursday after she repeatedly refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

U.S. District Judge David Bunning said Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis would remain in the custody of U.S. Marshals until she complied with court orders to issue the licenses. Bunning said fines weren’t enough to compel Davis, who has remained defiant in the face of the Supreme Court’s decision in June to legalize same-sex marriage, Ryland Barton of Kentucky Public Radio reported.

Bunning told Davis that while public officials may have their own religious beliefs, they still must respect the law, Blue Grass Politics tweeted.

Five out of six Kentucky county deputy clerks have agreed to issue marriage licenses. The one remaining clerk is Davis’ son, Nathan. The plaintiff’s attorneys proposed to Bunning to release Davis if she agreed to not to interfere with distributing licenses, the Associated Press reported.

Hundreds of protesters appeared outside the courthouse in Ashland, Kentucky, for Thursday’s hearing. Amid the scene were preachers with bullhorns and gay rights supporters chanting “Love is not a sin,” AP reported, while a small plane flew overhead with a banner that read: “Stand Firm, Kim.”

The couples that sued Davis had originally asked that officials fine her, not send her to jail.

What right does the federal government have to regulate state marriage licenses through federal court orders?

Seems like this is a county matter, not fedgov.

Do like OK and stop issuing licenses altogether. Be done with it.

They keep saying it's the law. It's not the law, nobody voted on it, it didn't pass. and nobody signed it.

Honestly I was going for shock rather than humor. When you think about it that's the least offensive thing they do.

If I had my way, they'd have theirs, with the judge.

One does wonder the effect on the "federal" if the Judge were to disappear over night, never seen again???

If that happened, another cog would be slipped into the gears, no big deal. A half a day news cycle and on to the next one.

It would be a BIG deal if that happened to the new cog. And a VERY BIG DEAL if it happened to the cog that replace the cog. The cog after that would rule he or she doesn't have jurisdiction.

They keep saying it's the law. It's not the law, nobody voted on it, it didn't pass. and nobody signed it.

Excellent point. The Judicial branch issues opinions (and oftentimes Unconstitutional ones) -- not laws. Also, she reportedly didn't refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples only. She stopped issuing marriage licenses at all. It is the Federal government's obligation to provide its own enforcement-Clerks of D.C. licensing orders, not the States' and citizens of them; which should be able to opt out of Anti-1st Amendment religous-conscience coercions. She was elected in xxxx, sworn to uphold the law I suppose, the supremes in effect create an ex post fact o law she is not party to. The judge is a degenerate ASS. More importantly a judge should be able to recognize and rule on laws.

If there is no penalty, the cogs will continue to do what they do. So it may be the responsibility of the people to penalize them for their wrongful acts. That is impossible for most because the penalty to them is greater than the benefit. However, on occasions some people pour gasoline on their head and set themselves on fire because of the wrongful action of some cog. And, others are driven to suicide.

However, those actions do no good because they doesn't penalize the cogs. If just a dozen also removed or harmed the cog when taking their lives, that would penalize the cogs doing evil and the other cogs would take notice and stop doing evil.

She did not break any law, she defied a court ruling and court rulings are not law. Only US congress and states general assembly can make law. When people say that a court ruling is the "Law of the Land", they are stupid.

I hope this will be a lesson to those deluded patriots who think that their county sheriff is going to heroically step up and stand with them against the federal aggressors. Sheriff's departments nationwide love nothing more than to be included in some federal operation or other in which they can rub shoulders with FBI, DEA, BATF, etc. agents and then go home and tell their wives about it.

"How many people's lives did you destroy today, honey?"

"Too many too count. Those FBI guys and me shot up a whole house full of people. Flash bang grenades, tear gas, assault rifles, body armor, the whole nine yards. It was awesome. If that grandmother had complied with my demands a little faster, I might not have had to shoot her. But her dog was barking at me, and of course I was in fear for my life, and officer safety is paramount, and we need to go home at the end of the day. So I shot her, and her little dog, too. Turns out we had the wrong address, but one of the DEA guys found a joint in the back bedroom, so it was all good. How was your day?"
