The words we use to describe people, places, events, etc. are the direct link to concepts and the pipeline to all of our thoughts, decisions, actions and everything else that make us human. As someone who writes every day for a living, I treat words and language as a tool of honor
tools that should always to be used as if one were under an oath of allegiance to reality. This week, my reverence for words and their meanings was amplified by a new Quinnipiac University National poll about the current presidential candidates. The poll asked respondents to name the first word that comes to mind when considering each of the three leading candidates. The results tell us just about everything we need to know about the publics opinion of Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and Jeb Bush. (Sensitive readers may want to skip over the image below that contains some of the answers.) *** So, what was the first word that came to mind for each? Clinton: Liar Trump: Arrogant Bush: Bush If I were a Hillary Clinton supporter, I would be really worried about this word association. And, its not just liar that would concern me. Its also the second- and third-most-often cited terms that came to respondents minds, which were dishonest and untrustworthy. No matter how competent someone may be, nobody likes or trusts a liar, and this perception could end up being her downfall. In the case of Donald Trump, I dont think the master real estate developer/marketer would take offense to being called arrogant. But many people might choose to vote against him because of it. Hey, Im all for being confident, proud and unapologetic about success, but being arrogant, along with being a blowhard and an idiot (the second- and third-most-cited terms) doesnt exactly seem to me to be a path to the presidency. Image credits: Quinnipiac University The candidate in this poll I feel the worst for is Jeb Bush, because the first word that comes to mind in his case, Bush, is something that he cant do anything about. For Jeb, its probably a case of positive and negative in his name. I suspect, however, that in this year when outsiders/non-politicians are doing so well, the moniker Bush is much more of a negative than a positive. Jebs second- and third-most-often-cited words family and honest also are very revealing. Both terms are generally positive. But in Jebs case the family part has baggage, and the honest part may be a bit too much. As a resident of Florida, Jeb Bush was my governor, and I thought he did a good job in that position. Unfortunately for Jeb, I think he may be a bit too honest for his own good when addressing national problems. I say that because it seems like what the conservative base wants right now is leadership, strong words and decisivenes
not a measured, too honest candidate who weighs both sides of an issue the way Jeb tends to. *** Now, in the spirit of the Quinnipiac poll, I would like to offer my first word impression of each candidate. Clinton: Sneaky Trump: Ego Bush: Too Honest Ive already explained my Jeb first word, and for Hillary I think sneaky is an apt description of her some 30 years in the public eye. Love them or hate them, Hillary and Bill Clinton have an earned reputation as willing to draw outside the lines for their own benefit. As for Trump, ego can be both a good thing and a bad thing. I want a president who has a strong sense of self and a decisive, take-charge personna. What I dont want is someone who will let their ego run roughshod on the Constitution, and the American people. *** OK, now its your turn. Fed officials are meeting this weekend at the annual Jackson Hole, Wyo., policy summit. Fed Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer will present his views on inflation developments on Saturday at 12:25 p.m. Eastern. Gold prices finished 1% higher Friday, but the week brought about the worst weekly selling in more than a month. Oil prices settled nearly 12% higher for week, as expectations that overall weakness in prices will give way to big declines in production. Rising political tensions in oil-rich Yemen also raised concerns over stability in the Middle East. Tropical Storm Erika is headed for Florida, and already Gov. Rick Scott has urged residents to prepare, declaring a state of emergency for all counties Friday morning.
