Lew: I have long been of the view that the political establishment would provide its own “opposition,” as a way of reinforcing public attraction to the structured order. This is where the agent provocateur performs for the state: “see just how bad the opposition to the established order is? Don’t you prefer what you already have?” Trump fits this role perfectly. He can shout out all of the inanities he wants; people will see either of the candidates the establishment has picked for us for our “choice” as being better. Ron Paul could not fill this role, as he was his own self-directed person. By contrast with Trump, Ron had to be kept off the stage. The contrast was like that in comedy: the establishment could (and did) embrace the politically safe Mark Russell, while the likes of Lenny Bruce and George Carlin had to be targeted for their “offensive speech.” Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
