WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republican party presidential frontrunner Donald Trump said on Sunday high salaries paid to chief executives were a "joke" and a "disgrace" and said these were often approved by company boards stacked with the CEO's friends.

Trump, a real estate mogul who has said he plans to use his net worth of $8.7 billion to fund his White House campaign, said in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation" that it was hard to tackle the question of corporate pay because too many corporate boards lacked independence.

"It's disgraceful. Sometimes the boards rule but I would probably say it's less than 10 percent; and you see these guys making enormous amounts of money. It's a total and complete joke," he said.

In particular Trump mentioned retailer Macy's Inc , which in July stopped selling his menswear line after he described migrants from Mexico as drug-runners and rapists.

"You'll take a company like, I could say Macy's or I could say many other companies, where they put in their friends as the head of the company and they get whatever they want," he said.

Macy's did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Trump's attack on corporate boards echos the kind of criticism expressed by shareholder activists such as Carl Icahn, the billionaire investor who Trump has said he would like as his Treasury secretary should he become president.

Trump also said his tax plan, to be unveiled in the coming weeks, would cut taxes for the middle class and corporations, "but for the hedge fund guys they are going to be paying up."

A CBS News poll showed Trump, who is competing for the party's nomination for the November 2016 election, ahead in key battleground states, with retired neurosurgeon and political newcomer Ben Carson in second place.

The poll showed Trump attracting 29 percent of likely Republican voters in Iowa, with Carson on 25 percent. In New Hampshire, Trump had 40 percent to Carson's 12 percent.

Carson said his time on the boards of Kellogg Co and Costco Wholesale Corp , including on compensation committees, showed he had well-rounded experience.

"You get an enormous amount of experience doing those things," he said, speaking on CBS after Trump.

"In fact, if you go back and you look at the compensation of the top executives, it was really very reasonable, nothing like what you were talking about in the previous segment."

The pay of chief executives has also been attacked by Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. According to research by the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal thinktank, CEOs' pay in 2013 was nearly 300 times the pay of the average worker.

Stephen... It's no wonder why in the 1950's a family could own a home and a car all while living off the fathers salary. The mother wasn't forced to work outside the home to make ends meet. This was a time when CEO's were making perhaps 5 to 10 times the wages of the workers in their companies. So what if the worker made $10k while the CEO make $100k. Everyone was happy with that. Today we have workers making $50k while their CEO's are making $15 million. To make matters worse, the economy isn't keeping in pace with the workers, it's trying to stay in line with what the CEO's are making , meaning at the worker level, the husband, wife and sometimes even the children have to work just to make ends meet. As for buying a home or affording a new car, "forget i228-6

J... The system for business in America is out of control. CEO's sit on the boards of other companies and they all agree to vote for pay raises for one another regardless of performance. Sounds a lot like Congress who gets to vote on pay raises for themselves, despite a bad economy. In addition to voting for pay raises, there are severance agreements put in place that allow a CEO, who heads a failing company, to resign and receive upwards to 50 million dollars in severance packages that include cash, lifelong use of the company jet, dry cleaning, limo use, etc. Let one of us not mop the floor correctly and we get fired with no unemployment. Most people do not understand what goes on in boardrooms and allow the company lobbyists to get into corrupt deals with our lawmakers and put out propaganda that attacks anyone who attempts to expose the Devil's deals. We are such followers that we agree with the enemy and attack those who are trying to fix this crooked system. We rip apart politicians who try to fix things and we live in resentment of our bosses knowing that something isn't quite fair. But instead of doing what is hard or uncomfortable and fixing the problem, we call ourselves "getting back" at our employers by wasting time at work, doing a half #$%$ job, texting, surfing the internet, etc. So not we have a labor force of people who are lazy, disgruntled, entitled, or all of the above and an economic system that exploits our freedoms and misrepresents capitalism. WAKE UP my fellow Americans and know that a crooked system can only go on for so long before it collapses. My child at the age of 11 did a school project exploring the theories of the downfall of the Roman Empire. She had to compare the behaviors and situations that may have contributed to Rome's fall to behaviors that the United States government and people are mirroring. Some of the most popular theories involved having unsecured borders, government corruption, poor health, decline in morals and values (our obsession with Kardashians and abandonment of God), overburdened military, unemployment, etc. These things are not going to correct themselves. It will take a concerted effort (so get over all your hate for your fellow Americans whether due to race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation {you can disagree without hate}, party affiliation, etc.) and commitment to staying in the fight for the long haul. Stop fainting and wavering when results don't happen as fast as you think it should. Start with the man in the mirror and make sure you are being just and honest. Then you will be more bold in demanding it from your bosses and CEOs and government officials. Let's also demonstrate unity. If the President you did not vote for wins...support that President anyway. We can disagree with policies, but stop the attacks against our Presidents. I hated hearing people attack President Bush, calling him stupid and what not. Now we hear people attacking President Obama, calling him immature names like O bum a. How old are you??????? Disagree with respect. The world is watching like vultures and salivating hyenas. They see our police killing unarmed citizens based on race, they see the citizens turning against our police officers, they see us mocking our leaders, and they see us embracing behaviors that make people wonder if we ever knew God. No one person, no one President, no one CEO, no one reality tv celebrity has degraded our country, WE have. So it will take US to fix it. Let's get busy. God bless you all and God bless the United States of America.41-2

Lawrence... Can't agree with Rump about much but for sure can on this, as a now retired COO, I experienced Boards rubber stamp often. Many years ago now, up until 80's that is, the President, CEO, etc all came up through the ranks. They had direct experience with what it took to build the product. Then Boards started to hire folks from the Financial side. Well Financial folks believe anything they can not easily put a cost on is worthless. It is hard to cost experience, corporate knowledge, etc. Once that was done then it was no big deal to off-shore, to layoff for a quick hit to stock prices, etc, etc. Today after nearly 30 years of off-shore the corporate knowledge resides overseas. Sayonara to jobs, etc, smart decisions, etc, etc, etc... 62-2

Cal ... Everyone please listen to Lawrence. '..."up until the 80's...the president, CEO, etc all came up through the ranks." THE 80's - corporate raiding ("investors" buy up the shares of a company whose value is much more than it's stock price. These "investors" sell off the assets, destroy the company and create great wealth for a few and great unemployment for the community and move on). THE 80's - Trickle Down Economics aka Voodoo Economics - (cut taxes on the rich, encourage investment and it's better for us "commoners". Basically if you pile the Lord's table high enough, some scraps will fall off for us) THE 80's...the time of the "Conservatives" darling Ronald Reagan. I lived through corporate raiding, downsizing, outsourcing and all Anti-American policies beginning with this President (a career actor) until the current President (never worked a day in his life) which took me and my hard working family, who provided good paying jobs to the community from the middle class, to "commoners" and our employees from craftsmen to "welfare recipients". Damn them...Damn them all to Hell. 7-7

Clayton I remember when Phillips Petroleum rallied the troops to keep T Boone Pickens from taking over Phillips 66. They got everyone to support them in their decision to keep Pickens from getting his hands on enough stock to control the board. This was supposedly done to keep Pickens from moving the offices of Phillips 66 out of Bartlesville, OK. A move that the board said would be catastrophic to Phillips and cause extreme harm to the Bartlesville, OK economy which solely depended on Phillips. About 4 years later, the new CEO of Phillips, voted on by the board and who was an insider, did the identical thing that everyone rallied against Pickens to prevent. Just goes to show you, you can't trust any executive board member. They are all liars and pansies. It's okay if THEY vote to do it, but not if an outsider comes in and kicks their lazy tails out and then does it. Hypocrites. 9
