China's infrastructure investment in Indonesia has not stopped, despite the failure of Beijing's bid for a high-speed rail construction project in the country, evidenced by the fact that the two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding on power station construction and electricity cooperation.

Shen Danyang, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce, announced the new deals Wednesday and said the Chinese side felt sorry that its high-speed rail bid was rejected.

The Indonesian government announced earlier this month that it had decided to reject proposals from both China and Japan to build a high-speed rail connecting Jakarta and Bandung because the plans were not in line with the "national conditions" in Indonesia.

Instead of constructing a high-speed rail line, Indonesia said it has changed the plan to a medium-speed line, and welcomes China and Japan to present new proposals.

Despite the setback, the Ministry of Commerce said that at the end of March, China and Indonesia signed an economic cooperation memorandum of understanding that involves the construction of a coal-fired power station and an electricity grid.

Sources familiar with the matter said that the first-stage construction of a China Huadian Company-invested coal-fired power station on the island of Bali was completed in August. China Huadian, a central government-run enterprise, which invested US$670 million in the project, will operate the new facility for 30 years.

The power supply in Indonesia has for years been unable to meet the demand amid the country's rapid economic development. The Indonesian Ministry of Finance revealed recently that it will apply for loans from the China-initiated Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for projects aimed at building new power plants and marine transportation facilities.
