Medicine has replaced rice cookers and toilet seats as the No. 1 item on the shopping list of Chinese visitors to Japan since the Lunar New Year holiday in February, the site said. The drugs favored by Chinese visitors include painkillers, cold medicine, eye drops, bandages and fever-relieving patches, as they are easy to find and come with clear and simple instructions, Rednet said. Some mainland visitors also choose medicines sold in Hong Kong because they come in more stylish packaging and because they are more effective than local products at the same price level, Rednet added. The phenomenon, the report said, shows the shortcomings of Chinese drug makers, who spend a lot on marketing but give little thought to user experience in terms of both packaging and instructions. The fact that Chinese shoppers would choose foreign products because domestically produced drugs are less effective indicates the need for regulators and industry groups to get involved and improve the quality of local products, Rednet said. The website also urged regulators, along with customs officials and tour operators to remind travelers of the risks of self-medication without the advice of medical professionals.
