The first Democrat debate was "not very exciting," but Hillary Clinton "did what she had to do," and the other candidates on the stage, especially Bernie Sanders, should have challenged her more, Republican Donald Trump said on Wednesday.

His big complaint? The Democrats' big spending plans.

"They just couldn't give more away," Trump told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Wednesday.

"In other words, every time somebody gave something away, whatever it may have been -- free health care, free education -- the other one would stand up and, 'We'll give you at home, this -- and we'll give you' --

"I'm saying to myself, ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching, because that means the money is just going out the door, and you know, we're a country that owes, we have a debt right now of $19 trillion.

"According to every statistic I've seen -- Bernie Sanders, his plan is going to cost the country $18 trillion or $20 trillion over a 10-year period. "And we have to get rid of that, otherwise we're going to have one of the great depressions of all time.

"But we're right around the corner, because there is a bubble right now, and it's a big bubble and it's going to be a very ugly bubble.

"And here these people are, and they just couldn't give away more."

Trump, asked about the investment firm Goldman Sachs, said he does view them as a force for good in the economy.

"They're a fantastic firm, and they make money, but they put people to work, they raise tremendous amouts of capital..."

At Tuesday's debate, Sanders said "Wall Street regulates Congress" rather than the other way around. He said the big investment banks must be broken up. Clinton on the other hand, admitted that she represented Wall Street as a senator from New York: "And I went to Wall Street in December of 2007 -- before the big crash that wehad -- and I basically said, 'Cut it out! Quit foreclosing on homes! Quit engaging in these kinds of speculative behaviors." She advocates giving regulators authority to "rein in and stop this risk."

On another topic, Trump called it a "big mistake" for Sanders to give Hillary a pass on her use of a personal email server to conduct State Department business. "You do have an FBI investigation," Trump noted.

(Sanders at one point turned to Hillary and told her, "The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn e-mails...Enough of the e-mails. Let's talk about the real issues facing America." Sanders' comments were viewed by some as giving Hillary a pass, although that's reportedly not the way he intended it to sound.)

Trump concluded that, "In all fairness, like her or not, she (Clinton) did her job." As for her opponents -- "they were very, very kind, and probably if they want to win, they really should have been a lot tougher, in my opinion."

While the debate was in progress, Trump tweeted, There's "no way" anyone can imagine former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee as president and he said former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley "has very little chance."

On former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, Trump retweeted, "Why is Webb there??"

Trump's conclusion: "Sorry, there is no STAR on the stage tonight!"
