Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is eyeing the global market with its annual Nov. 11 "Singles Day" shopping blowout this year, CEO Daniel Zhang said at a launch event in Hangzhou on Oct. 13.

Representatives from 39 countries gathered at Alibaba's headquarters in the city for the launch of this year's campaign to promote online sales on Nov. 11, which totaled a record 57.1 billion yuan (US$9 billion) in sales last year.

"Globalization will be the main theme of the Nov. 11 sales this year and in coming years. If consumers check the Taobao and TMall apps on their phones, they will discover merchandise from around the world, which is more attractive than just bargains," Zhang said. Related News

Alibaba founder and group chair Jack Ma placed the first order during the launch event, spending 38,888 yuan (US$6,130) on a 46-kilogram bluefin tuna imported from Japan when going through an array of fresh produce from around the world displayed at the launch.

Pre-orders for bluefin tuna and other goods began with the event, and Alibaba is working with over 100 industry groups from around the world that promote fresh produce to bring more of it to China, according to Shanghai's China Business News.

One of the groups is the Washington Apple Commission, which said its partnership with Alibaba's fresh produce shopping site Miao under TMall has improved recognition of its brand among Chinese consumers by 50%.

A Chilean diplomat attending the event said e-commerce has become an important part of Chile's economy and half of the 4 million express parcels sent from Asia to the South American country before Christmas last year were from China.

China Business News also noted that Alibaba plans to use this year's Singles Day sales as a trial run for its vision to serve 2 billion consumers around the world in the next decade.

CEO Zhang said Alibaba will move the sales campaign's headquarters to Beijing this year,as the company plans to tap into the capital's global influence to expand abroad.

Among the more than 40,000 vendors and more than 30,000 brands taking part in this year's Singles Day promotions, more than 5,000 brands are from outside China, while foreign retailers including Costco, Metro and Macy's are also taking part, the paper said.

Kao of Japan also opened an online shop on TMall during the event. TMall will be its exclusive distributor for Japan-manufactured products in China, while the company's Chinese operations will continue to offer goods produced locally or overseas through other retail channels.
