Cutting up its credit card is the only way to make Congress reduce spending

The US Treasury’s recent announcement that the government will reach the debt ceiling on November 3 means Congress will soon be debating raising the government’s borrowing limit again. Any delay in, or opposition to, raising the debt ceiling will inevitably be met with hand-wringing over Congress’ alleged irresponsibility. But the real irresponsible act would be for Congress to raise the debt ceiling.

Cutting up its credit card is the only way to make Congress reduce spending. Anyone who doubts this should listen to the bipartisan whining over how sequestration has so drastically reduced spending that there is literally nothing left to cut. But, according to the Heritage Foundation, sequestration has only reduced spending from $3.6 trillion to $3.5 trillion. Only in DC would a less than one percent spending reduction be considered a draconian cut.

Defense hawks have found a way around sequestration by shoving billions of dollars into the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) account. OCO spending is classified as “emergency” spending so it does not count against the spending limits, even when OCO is used for items that do not fit any reasonable definition of emergency.

Yet, even using OCO to boost military spending by as much as $80 billion does not satisfy the military-industrial complex’s ravenous appetite for taxpayer dollars.

During the majority of my time in Congress, debt ceiling increases were routinely approved. In fact, congressional rules once allowed the House of Representatives to increase the debt ceiling without a vote or even a debate! Congress’ need to appear to respond to growing concerns over federal spending has forced it to end the practice of rubber-stamping debt ceiling increases.

Continuously increasing spending will lead to rising inflation as the Federal Reserve tries to monetize the ever-increasing debt. This will eventually lead to a serious economic crisis. When the crisis occurs, Congress will have no choice but to cut spending. The question is not if, but when and under what circumstances, spending will be cut.

The only alternative for cutting spending in response to economic crisis involves Congress gradually unwinding the welfare state in a manner that does not harm those dependent on federal programs. Congress will not even consider doing this until enough people have embraced the ideas of liberty to force the politicians to reconsider the proper role of government.

Those who accept the premises of the welfare statists are incapable of making principled arguments against welfare and entitlement programs. Thus, they can only quibble over spending levels or how to more efficiently manage the federal bureaucracy. While fiscal conservatives may gain some minor victories with this approach, their failure to challenge the welfare state’s morality or effectiveness dooms any effort to seriously curtail welfare state spending.

Similarly, one cannot favor both serious reductions in the military budget and an aggressive foreign policy. So-called cheap hawks may achieve some reforms in the Pentagon’s budget. They many even succeed in killing a few wasteful weapons projects. However, their unwillingness to oppose a foreign policy of perpetual war means they will always cave in to the war hawks’ demands for ever-higher military budgets.

Those who understand the dangers from continuing on our current path should support efforts to stop Congress from raising the debt ceiling. However, supporters of liberty will not win the political battle over government spending on welfare and warfare until we win the intellectual battle over the role of government. Those of us who know the truth must do all we can to spread the ideas of liberty.

Thats right Ron, you sat there for 22 long years, accomplished NOTHING, retired a millionaire.

How anyone is able to sit in that corrupt government for 22 years is beyond belief, then be so self righteous.

Retiring a millionaire is easy these days. Most workers can do it with their 401K plans and busing a house at the right time and locale. Ron's portfolio benefitted from investment in gold, i.e., he was not on the take, and to imply he was corrupt is dishonest.

Imply?????

Good heavens...

I said the "government" was corrupt. Ron was a PART OF THE CORRUPT GOVERNMENT. Need I draw a diagram?

With the devaluation of our currency, being a millionaire's not what it used to be.

Paul could have walked away from the "corrupt" members any time, but no, he stayed twenty two long years.

Check his financial status every two years from initial election to the last. Profitable being a member of Congress.

Now he has his wife out hustling and grubbing for money.

The funniest thing about ron paul's 'campaign for liberty' began years ago when his toady 'john tate'., who has no internet ID history or reputation whatsoever, other than sending out ron paul emails begging for money, constantly begs for money for years. as if it costs money to send out very benign emails.

i guess it only costs money to send spam emails begging for more money if your grandaughters hubby cant find a real job?

a true joke.

the other most ridiculous thing paul ever did, and no one seems to remember this, was when he sued one of his supporters for making a 'mean anti-romney youtube video.

paul contended in his lawsuit that since the video maker put 'ron paul 2012' at the end of the vid, that the video maker was 'impersonating' paul and the paul campaign. the best part is that the video was mocking romney's bizarre mormon beliefs.

Paul's federal lawsuit was tossed out of court immediately., and rightly so.

one side note that i find hilarious, i myself have filed a federal lawsuit (without a lawyer) and it was not thrown out, yet ron paul the millionare with his millionare lawyers, their lawsuit gets tossed. I find that very interesting. but anyway...

well since paul's daughters are rainbow girls, and his wife probably eastern star, that means theyre all masons- as webster tarpley has always contended., and mormon(mason) romney and paul (mason) stick with the 'craft'.

his perv son rand just verifies any doubt i had about paul.

WOW! The ron paul crowd is always saying we're in the greatest depression, that the sky is gonna fall at any second, and points out that 92+ million americans are unemployed, and that most american families supposedly dont have $500 bucks to their name!

Ada, I'm really surprised about what you claimed about it being easy or typical for most americans to be able to retire as millionares. That sounds simply bizarre. no offense intended. ;-/ But do you really believe that? if so do you have any evidence to back it up?

I walk into local market.

Thirty two employees, two full time, rest part time.

No benefits of any kind, zero, nada, minimum wage.

Future millionaires???? Really? I dont think so.

The hue and cry is do away with the minimum wage law. I ask would wages go up, remain the same or go down? We all know the answer to that.

The keys to Ada's position are "workers" investing, and buying real estate.

Non-workers and the unemployed will likely not make the millionaires' club. Here's a nifty Inflation Calculator to support my position:

I entered 1M in 1965 which is worth over 7.7M in 2015 dollars.

As with real estate, the local marketplace will determine the fair price and wage, and it will vary all over the country.

Were that true, some employers now paying minimum would raise wages?

That being the case, why not pay more NOW, why wait?

I never witnessed any such "benevolence" from any employer, from the government on down.

Employers want maximum sweat and blood for minimum pay, that is the system world wide.

Ayn Rand said the masses are but mere lice, with barely a right to life. She had many followers.

A millionaire on nearly every block in US: study By Richard MorganJune 11, 2014 (New York Post)

There’s a millionaire living on nearly every block in America, on average, a study out Tuesday revealed.

The number of millionaire households in the US grew by 18 percent last year from 2012, the study found, bringing the total number of millionaire households in the country to roughly 7.1 million.

That means there is one millionaire household for every 16 households in the country. That’s up from one of every 22 households being millionaires in 2010 and one in 24 in 2007.

So today, with about 22 houses per block, if there isn’t a family worth seven figures living on your block, there will likely be, on average, one living on the next block.

The study, by the Boston Consulting Group, excluded the value of the home in calculating household wealth.

And the rich — fueled in large part by stock market gains — are expected to get richer faster than those not yet worth a million bucks, the BCG study found. “Wealth held by all segments above $1 million is projected to grow by at least 7.7 percent per year through 2018,” BCG forecast, “compared with an average of 3.7 percent per year in segments below $1 million.”

The US had 5.2 million millionaire households in 2010 and 4.9 million millionaire households in 2007, BCG said.

If you thought the US had the most millionaires — you are right. Roughly 44 percent of the world’s millionaire households live here.

The US also had the most households worth $100 million or more — at 4,754. China, though, now has the second most millionaire households, finishing 2013 with 2.4 million. The number of millionaire households in that country rose 82 percent last year, BCG reported, an increase that allowed it to leapfrog Japan — where the number of qualifying households actually fell 20 percent to 1.2 million.

But in terms of wealth concentration, Qatar wins by far, with one in six households breaking the million-dollar barrier.
