SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A New York man is building his own sovereign nation called Zaqistan on a remote piece of land in Utah.

Zaq Landsberg has created a yellow-and-red flag, official-looking passports and a border patrol gate guarded by a giant robot sentry for the realm, KSL-TV reported (bit.ly/1Lo0yHk ).

"The conceptual goal is I want it to become a real country," said Landsberg, its president. "I mean, that goal is not going to happen. It's impossible, but going through the motions, (I'm) trying to make that happen."

He's even created a motto for the land of Zaqistan: "Something from nothing."

When he bought the sage-brush covered stretch of Utah backcountry a decade ago, the city-dwelling Landsberg was amazed at how removed it was. It's about 60 miles from the nearest town and 15 miles away from a paved road.

While he calls the area harsh and desolate, it's also appealing. View gallery In this video frame grab taken on June 29, 2013, shows … In this video frame grab taken on June 29, 2013, shows a robot sentry that was created by Zaq Lansbe …

"Out here, it's not that crazy of an idea to have your own little spot, and to do your own thing and to have your own space and the privacy to do that," said Landsberg, who's hesitant to reveal the exact location of Zaqistan for fear of people getting lost trying to find it.

While he knows the 4-acre piece of land equipped with a supply bunker won't actually become its own recognized country, Lansdsberg said building it is an artistic exploration in how far he can push the concepts of land ownership and sovereignty.

"My goal is to, like, probe those little areas," Landsberg said. "To try and find what that does mean."

He pays property taxes to Box Elder County, about 160 miles north of Salt Lake City, though he refers to the payments as tributes. He wants to make his little nation look legitimate. The passports look and feel real, and visitors like his friend Mike Abu can get them stamped as they enter and exit the country.

"Legitimacy is one of those things that's fairly subjective to begin with," Abu said. "But when we're talking about it, does it exist? There's no question about it."

sciamhach ... It's easy enough to find. Just search the local tax assessor database. You can find out who owns any house or piece of property that way as the information is all freely available to the public and accessible online. Most sites let you search by address or just a name. You can see how much the property is assessed for (obviously), how often the property's changed hands and for how much. You can also see how much was paid in taxes, if they are paid on time and how much is owed or past due. It's all rather useful when looking to buy a house, but otherwise has a rather squicky invasion of privacy feel. 34-5

J o... Actually I 'm surprised someone else was doing that. I just did exactly that. One of his half acres is at 41.436507673957,-113.421034973135 on google maps. Very very remote! And it doesn't look like he's a New Yorker.. He lives in California. And he doesn't own 4 acres in that area. He owns 2! "Nice reporting!" I've used the county assessors sites for a long while. It really is a very good tool to assess new houses! 12-2

tan... ... @ Kevin: It's not rocket science. I found the Legal in less than 5 minutes. His land is made up of several smaller parcels. Out of my total respect for people that don't want large contingents of other people knowing where it is (he obviously doesn't want others to know), I'm not going to cut and paste it here. It's as simple as doing a search for the county (Box Elder) and follow the prompts to the tax assessors and enter a LAST and then FIRST name and bingo. Then grab your GPS and head on out. 9-2

tim...technically you are correct but not in certain counties is Pennsylvania where Politicians and Judges owe huge back taxes for years and years on multiple properties... Good luck in places like Luzerne county Lackawanna and Lehigh and Northampton counties. They only publish back taxes for other people not the elite.. 6-1

Jeffrey Dahmer3 ... It is quite easy to find out who owns what land. I purchased a chip for my GPS so that I would know exactly where all of the public land that I can legally access, and I was shocked to discover that it shows on the map who owns every piece of land in the state. It shows who owns every single house or lot in towns and cities. I thought it was only to identify public land and terrain.

sciamhach ... My that's a lot of protesting Steve & Teresa. You guys are going to *love* this. Go to the vital records site and people can know who you are married to, when your wedding was and who officiated (and by extension make an educated guess as to what religion, if any, you follow). Pop over to your local Circuit Court website and you'll find a person's history of tickets, lawsuits, bankruptcies, divorces, arrests, etc. along with a ton of information including things like gender, age, address, other people involved, their name/address/gender, lawyer names, who won, who paid and how much, etc. Ever sign an official petition? That's also public record, and it displays your name, address, phone number and email address. Just head over to your local City Clerk site. Whether or not you voted is public record. Again, go to the City Clerk website.Everything you do that has anything to do with the government is public record. All you have to do for any of it, is go to the relevant website or government building. Some areas make it easier than others, but all of this info is freely available.
