LONDON (Reuters) - A cheap off-patent drug that relieves some symptoms of Alzheimer's disease may also help keep people at an advanced stage of the illness out of nursing homes, at least for a while.

Research published on Tuesday showed that withdrawing the commonly used drug donepezil in moderate-to-severe patients doubled their risk of moving into nursing care within a year, although it made no difference during the following three years.

Donepezil, originally sold by Eisai and Pfizer as Aricept and now available generically for just over 20 pounds ($30) a year, works by raising the levels of chemicals within the brain that allow nerve cells to communicate.

Like other existing Alzheimer's treatments, it cannot slow the disease process itself.

It is currently only approved for mild-to-moderate disease, so patients often stop taking it when they deteriorate. But Robert Howard of University College London, who led a publicly funded study of the drug, said it was time to reconsider this.

"People will look at our trial and it will make them think that these drugs have more to offer in severe Alzheimer's disease than perhaps was previously thought," he told reporters.

The new study is important, he believes, because it shows how a drug could change lives by keeping sufferers at home, thereby saving on residential dementia care that costs more than 30,000 pounds a year.

"We are all impatient for the advent of true disease-modifying drugs that can slow or halt the Alzheimer's process, but donepezil is available right now and at modest cost," Howard said.

The new findings, published in the journal Lancet Neurology, are a follow-up of trial data after donepezil modestly improved cognitive scores in advanced Alzheimer's patients in 2012. Because it was a secondary analysis, other experts said the results should be viewed as exploratory.

Drug companies including Eli Lilly, Biogen and Roche are working to develop true disease-modifying drugs for the memory-robbing disease, although progress is proving slow.

As a pharmacist, it's hard to watch Yahoo news being used as a shill for the drug companies. How about the truth for a change? The cause and the cure for Alzheimer's have been known for years. And no drugs are needed to either treat it or prevent it. That's why the public hasn't been informed. Alzheimer's is simply a long-term energy deficit in the brain, made worse by inflammation, nutrient deficits, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and the aging process itself. Ketones, from organic coconut oil, provide the cheap energy source. Add a good multi vitamin, DHA, lipoic acid, acetyl l-carnitine, and ubiquinol (active CoQ10), and presto, the mental decline of dementia and Alzheimer's can be basically completely arrested. Return to near function happens within a week provided the person is not too far gone. Bruce Fife has a wonderful book on sale at amazon....follow his outlined program and you won't have to worry about Alzheimer's....Best wishes to all.. 3-4

A ... Thanks Patriot. You are right. Bruce Fife has a few books that are good, I read one on coconut oil from library. Going to order one library doesn't have. Only $10 on Amazon. People spend too much on drugs that are kill us! I keep making reference to getting books at library and how little they cost when you buy them, for people to hopefully understand it doesn't cost much money to find other ways than these drugs that cost way more with undesirable side effects. I hope people read and do research to educate themselves rather than be here in yahoo just giving people a thumbs down.

navajo ... A person has to start putting things in a trusted family member's name, a home with an extra bedroom, use the ailing parent's social security to help with finances, adult daycare, a paid sitter a day a or two a month (use social security money) trial medical programs, sale the parent's house (if they have one) to make adjustments to your home, and help with bills. Alzheimer's pts. do better with family but nursing home is usually a sad eventuality. Start saving now !! EVERYBODY! Eat more vegetables, go for walks, watch cholesterol and blood sugar, play card games, listen to music dance BEEN THERE TWICE. Some of this info is 20/20 hindsight. There are also private residential living homes with only three or for people/pts. that are a lot less expensive than the big assisted living places and nursing homes. If parents have a pension and SS may be able to afford which was preferable in our case rather than going the Medicare Nursing home route where a person can only have a minimal amount of assets. Plan while parents are still in their sixties as to what you all will do. If Alzheimer's does not attack, your parent will have an easy transition into retirement, because they did not wait to downsize. 30-1

yummycat 14 hours ago 1 4 I read an entry to a medical journal some years back that this doctor had found high levels of glutamate in Alzheimer's patient's brains. Glutamate is a naturally occurring neuro-transmitter but in high levels is a neuro-toxin. I don't know if the molecular composition of glutamate is the same or similar to the monosodium glutamate (MSG) added to so many food products as a flavor enhancer or not. I took care of my Mom for many years, she had some dementia in the end. But doctors definitely over-medicate. They nearly killed her injecting her with a dye to do a CT-scan, which was totally unnecessary as she was scheduled to have a lung x-ray due to pneumonia. She was getting better until they did the scan, then she wound up in intensive care. The excuse they gave was they thought she had a tumor...she never smoked...what #$%$. Just a more expensive test ordered. I got her out of there as quickly as I could because everything they gave her made her sicker. She had complained about her scrambled eggs so they gave her Ativan, which made her so nauseous she couldn't eat at all! Ativan is an anti-anxiety medicine. She wasn't THAT anxious about her scrambled eggs...they probably were rubbery or cold. Anyway when she was finally released, they had a whole page of medications they wanted to put her on. We went over the list with a pharmacist and agreed to one thing on the list: Antenolol, which is a beta-blocker for heart health. She was in her 80's when this happened. She lived to be 94. 4-1

Navajo's comment, YES! Dan H, NO! Taking Aricept ALONG WITH Namenda is what slows down the progression. We have a family Dr smart enough to see this back in 2005, prescribing both for my Mom when anesthesia from an emergency surgery sent her mild Alzheimer into full blown wacko Alzheimer/dementia. While no one can predict how much the disease will subside as anesthesia wears off, you're guaranteed it will never go back fully and the combo helped bring her out of that crazy agitated stage. It took about 2 years but she was so much fun and a few times over the years even blurted out my name to my surprise, truly helped her brain function for the years she was with us. At the 4 year mark we were lucky to find a small private, awesome living facility with enough wonderful staff to care for our Mom, actually spend time with her, and they let us be fully involved when one of us was there most every day. Her decline was slow and she took both meds till in hospice in 2013 when a different health issue took her. So YES, plan, prepare, prevent, but if it comes to it, take BOTH Aricept and Namenda. BTW, I am in no way affiliated with healthcare or pharm and no one in my family or circle of friends is, for anyone else who doubts this. I just had an awesome Mom who has a smart Dr who helped us keep our Mother. Miss her to the ends of the earth.

WAYNE... several years ago went to several nursing homes on a business deal I was working on with the owner! I didn't say anything but it appeared that everyone in the place was in a catatonic state and they had them all on some kind of drugs as they appeared to be sleeping zombies 2

Lisa B ... Over the years (as a former Registered Nurse, now retired) I figured out that Alzheimers drugs are a scam and a money making scheme for drug companies. If they do actually "slow the progression of the symptoms" --great. If they don't do anything---then it just didn't work for that patient. Either way, the drug company makes money, patient doesn't get any better and the family doesn't sue because they can't prove anything. 8-3

Lynn Alzheimer's is a cash cow for the medical complex....... it makes them more money than cancer, as the patients live longer. It is shown to be exacerbated by the accumulation of aluminum in the brain. Fluoride speeds up the accumulation. You are given fluoridated water to drink by the government, and it is in all processed drinks, and most toothpastes and mouthwashes. Aluminum is absorbed through deodorants, and aluminum nano particles are in the chemtrails used in "geo-engineering"........ so it is in the food and water supplies, as well as the air you breath. Do you see the connection? Monsanto is developing aluminum resistant wheat and corn, since the dumping of aluminum on the earth is killing natural vegetation. Connect the dots. Follow the money.2-5

Lynn ... The good news is you don't have to consume fluoride! Also, you can detox from heavy metals like aluminum with natural products like bentonite clay, organic apple cider vinegar, lemons, baking soda, oatmeal, and other things. Do some research with NON government sponsored information. 3-2

I came across some info which said that Alzheimer's was caused by a bacteria. Th This is the latest info I've seen.

My memory problems are from a different source. The bacterial meningitis I suffered from was the cause of it. ;)
