Ben Carson is the new leader in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, pulling ahead of longtime front-runner Donald Trump by six points, the NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll reports.
It's the first time since June that Trump did not hold the top spot in the survey.
Here are the results:
•Ben Carson: 29 percent
•Donald Trump: 23 percent
•Marco Rubio: 11 percent
•Ted Cruz: 10 percent
•Jeb Bush: 8 percent
All other candidates have less than 3 percent support.
Full results of the poll will be published at midnight ET, the Journal reports.
The poll was conducted October 25-29 and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percent.
Other recent polls have put Carson in front of Trump. The most recent CBS/New York Times poll also has Carson leading nationally 26 percent to 22 percent. And Carson is leading in Iowa, where the first caucuses will be held.
Carson campaign manager Barry Bennett told CNN's Erin Burnett on Monday he expects Carson's lead to become a sustained trend, "because he's the only one who has the vision for making the Republican Party bigger, bolder and better."
John McCormack of The Weekly Standard and A.B. Stoddard of The Hill told Fox News that if Carson does continue to hold the lead it could cause Trump to drop out.
"Donald Trump's whole rationale that is he a winner, is he is No 1," McCormack told "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" "Once he no longer has that talking point I think it can really hurt him."
Trump's trailing of Carson by double-digits in Iowa could cause a reshuffling if Trump ends up losing, he said.
"He doesn't like second place. He said that in Iowa," Stoddard said. "He doesn't like losing. And that's why I think if he starts to slip he won't even make it to February 1. I think Donald Trump likes to ride on top, defy expectations, do what everyone said couldn't be done."
The Real Clear Politics average of polls did not yet include the latest NBC/WSJ poll, and still showed Trump with a 4.8 percent advantage over Carson, but that lead would shrink when the newest poll is added.
The most recent NBC/WSJ poll from mid-October had Trump leading Carson 25-22, meaning Carson made a nine-point gain on Trump.
An NBC online poll last week showed Carson and Trump tied at 26 percent.
