Steve Murdock, founding director of Rice University's Hobby Center for the Study of Texas and the state's former demographer, has projected that by the year 2040 Hispanics might make up more than 50 percent of the population in Texas as the Anglo population declines to 26 percent. His presentations have also predicted that if the educational attainment of the Hispanic population does not improve, the economy will suffer in the long run.
