Holding ‘gun-free zone’ backers accountable for mass murder

Posted on November 4, 2015 by Ben Bullard

Hoping to take the fight to the gun control lobby, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is calling for those in charge of “gun-free zones” to be held legally responsible for any mass murders that take place on their property.

From a report Tuesday at Guns.com:

A gun rights group on Monday called for liability in mass shootings to be shifted to the entity or person who created a gun-free zone on which the incident occurred.

The Second Amendment Foundation released its report on resolutions adopted at its September policy conference in Phoenix, Arizona, where the gun rights group reaffirmed its belief that that prohibiting guns in specific areas makes them vulnerable to mass shootings.

The SAF also voted to unify support of urban and rural gun ownership, going as far as to put in writing its undeniable support of a measure in Utah correcting language to the 1934 National Firearms Act and 1968 Gun Control Act defining suitable firearms as those “particularly suitable for sporting purposes,” where self-defense isn’t mentioned.

The bill, H.R. 2710 — also supported by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the National Rifle Association — would further protect large caliber rifles and shotguns from the classification of “destructive devices” under the NFA and would prevent the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from from being able to reclassify ammunition to “armor piercing.”

In the SAF’s laundry list of good initiatives, taking the offensive on the gun-free zone question is a tactic that 2nd Amendment supporters, who too often find themselves defending their position, can get behind. Instead of waiting for the gun control movement to grab at new restrictions and erode what’s left of the right bear arms, SAF is asking its supporters to begin taking that right back, in a very proactive way.

It’s a philosophical and strategic shift that progressives use relentlessly, for all the wrong reasons — but, argues Ammoland’s Rob Morse, those who value the 2nd Amendment can feel good about using those same tactics for the right reasons. There’s a reason deranged bad guys go where the guns aren’t, and those who seek to outlaw firearms in such places have blood on their hands:

The [next mass] murderer may plan his attack for years before he acts. The murderer will use a mechanical device to gain an advantage in the attack. The tool may be a knife, a car, a bomb or a gun. The murderer will scout and analyse the location where he plans to attack his victims. The murderer will pass a background check if he buys a firearm. The murderer will probably attack innocent victims in a so called “gun-free zone” where honest citizens are disarmed.

… If armed civilians are present, then the murderer will kill 2 to 3 people before he is stopped. The murderer will kill 14 to 15 people if the murderer can kill freely until the police arrive. The murderer will not get into a protracted gun battle with armed guardians. He will take his own life or surrender.

… The anti-rights groups will call for further restrictions on gun ownership. When examined in the clarity of hindsight, these proposed restrictions would stop neither this mass murder nor the previous mass murders. The anti-rights groups will say “We have to do something”. The anti-gun bigots will demand another law even though they have already passed 23 thousand firearms laws that did not prevent this crime.

They will claim they can stop evil men by disarming honest men. Though it now sounds foolish in the calm light of reason, this emotional appeal to “do something” will persuade the low information citizen who only reads the headlines.

Morse’s full article, by the way, is worth reading and sharing.

The American public — or, at least, a statistically significant chunk of it — is showing increasingly little interest in gun control, or in allowing themselves to remain unarmed in a media-driven culture of perceived danger and fear.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation processed a record number of background checks in the month of October,” The Washington Free Beacon reported Wednesday, “indicating that gun sales were at an all-time high for the sixth month in a row.”

Why do you think there are all these shootings at schools?

Great idea, thanks.

Super. Almost as if he's deliberately counteracting the morons who want to hold gun mfgrs responsible for people getting shot!

Anybody ever heard of SAF? Think I have. Something strange this way comes -- went to see whether by some lucky chance American Pistol and Rifle Assn (APRA) was still going, and this is what comes up instead:
