WASHINGTON —

In the wake of the terror attacks in Paris, more the half a dozen state governors say they will not allow thousands of refugees seeking sanctuary to relocate in their states. Washington Gov. Jay Inslee is not among them.

"I stand firmly with President Obama who said [Monday] morning," Jay Inslee said regarding Obama's pledge to accept thousands of Syrian refugees in the next year. "'We do not close our hearts to these victims of such violence and somehow start equating the issue of refugees with the issue of terrorism.'"

>> Essex Porter will be reporting on the refugee situation for KIRO 7 News at 5 p.m. Below are the questions we have answered now.

Why is there conversation about admitting refugees?

President Barack Obama said Monday that he remains committed to the United States taking in Syrians. He pledged to accept 10,000 in the next year. The refugees would be spread across the country.

Why are some governors saying no?

The governors are responding to heightened concerns that terrorists might use the refugees as cover to sneak across borders. Authorities said a Syrian passport was found near one of the attackers, and the Paris prosecutors' office says fingerprints from the attacker match those of someone who passed through Greece in October.

Inslee said governors do not decide whether refugees come to their states.

What is he saying?

Inslee said on Monday that "Washington will continue to be a state that welcomes those seeking refuge from persecution, regardless of where they come from or the religion they practice."

The announcement comes as President Barack Obama's administration has pledged to accept about 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next 12 months. The U.S. State Department said the refugees would be spread across the country.

"It's important to note that governors do not decide whether refugees come to their states. Those decisions are made by the federal government, and the U.S. State Department has a robust system in place to evaluate and place families who seek refugee status," Inslee said.

His statement came after governors in some southern states said they would not allow Syrian refuges following the Paris attacks. Read the statement in full here.

"That makes these anti-refugee comments by governors even more troublesome and of little value except to divide people and foment intolerance," Inslee said.

Is he nuts, or what?

No, the Federal government is not authorized to dictate that States admit refugees.

First I've heard any state saying this. Didn't occur to me!

These two links are short articles with FOX videos of interviews [less than 4 minutes each]. The first is Judge Napolitano basically mucking up the Constitution to rubber-stamp Federal obliterations of States Rights on this issue and the 2nd is Lt. Col. Allen West who speaks of powers not enumerated to the Federal government belonging to the States.

1. Can Governors Legally Block Refugees from Coming to Their States?

2. West on Syrian Refugees: 'No Military-Age Males Should Be Allowed In'

There are supposed to be lengthy and thorough vettings for 18-24 months of all asylum seekers and refugees before they're admitted here [Ref. Paris attacks reshape U.S. debate on immigration, security]. They aren't supposed to be roaming around in America during that process [Ref. Former ICE Director on Refugees and Security]. RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services; formerly the Refugee Aid Project during Central America's wars and upheavals) is a Texas group of attorneys arguing that any length of screening detention time at all is too long, especially for those with families, and that community-based alternatives are most appropriate [Ref. Response to ICE Announcement on Release of Refugee Families]. Many who claim to be fleeing from dangers of war, etc., are likely to arrive without documentation and verifiable statements. If they are approved for admittance without proper vettings: "Once granted U.S. protection, both refugees and asylees are entitled to a social security card and employment authorization. Depending on the individual’s or household’s needs and the length of time that has passed since their arrival or asylum status was granted, they may qualify to receive assistance including cash, medical, housing, educational, and vocational services to promote economic self-sufficiency and integration into society." [Ref. Refugees and Asylees in the United States]

This is a report about the illegal migrant crisis in Texas last year, endangering America's security for "open borders" politicos and such:

foxnews.com July 03, 2014: Texas rep says military bases ‘turning into refugee camps,’ appeals for help on border

Texas officials appealed to the Obama administration on Thursday to secure the U.S.-Mexico border once and for all as waves of illegal immigrant children overwhelm the system, with one lawmaker saying U.S. military bases effectively have been transformed into camps to handle the influx.
