Yahoo... As representatives from 195 nations gather in Paris to hammer out a global agreement to slash greenhouse gas emissions, a new study finds that the failure to do so could leave the world gasping for breath.

Marine plants such as phytoplankton are estimated to produce more than half the Earth’s atmospheric oxygen, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For the study, Sergei Petrovskii, an applied mathematics professor at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, calculated how unrestrained global warming could affect phytoplankton and thus the ocean’s ability to generate breathable air. He ran computer models that looked at what would happen to phytoplankton’s ability to photosynthesize at different temperatures.

If the world’s oceans warmed by 6 degrees Celsius—a realistic possibility if global emissions continue unabated—the tiny plants would halt oxygen production, according to the study, which was published Tuesday in the Bulletin of Mathematical Biology.

By 2100, the earth at sea level could have atmospheric oxygen levels comparable to the top of Mount Everest today. “And as far as I know, people cannot normally stay on Everest without oxygen masks for more than a few minutes,” Petrovskii said.

The threat has been “mostly overlooked” by climate scientists, Petrovskii said, noting that such a global disaster would come with little notice.

“A distinct feature of this catastrophe is that there will be few warning signs and little change before it is too late,” he said. That’s because phytoplankton can continue to produce oxygen and photosynthesize at levels below 6 degrees of temperature rise.

“Under a 2-degree increase, we will probably see no change; the 4-degree increase would already be dangerously close,” Petrovskii said, adding that more research is needed to determine what increase in global temperatures would halt phytoplankton’s ability to photosynthesize.

Ken... BS. Your Global warming BS has already been disproved by 90% of USA scientists. The 10% that has been bought and the skewed charts that are presented are based upon "cleansed" data (cyclic snapshots in time showing the uptrend) in support of the upcoming carbon tax. The 97% consensus on global warming is based upon 12,000 hand picked scientists. There are 31,000 scientists that signed a petition stating, "There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide will, in the forseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere ..." (per Wall Street Journal and Forbes articles). John L Casey, a former White House national space policy advisor, has gone through all of the data and has posted the truth. The sun has the most influence on climate change due to cycles of activity, and right now we are starting a cold cycle that will last 40 years, peaking in 2031. The data backs up his claims. The earth has just started a cooling down cycle based upon the sun and is not heating up. The tides are NOT rising and the ice caps are actually buildingup and not melting down (melting on one side and building up on another). Just look at all of the record setting cold temperatures and snow on the east coast of the USA. This is just another way to control and tax the population. 29% of Earth is land mass. Of that 29% humans occupy less than 1% of that area. Of the remaining 28% about 40% is pure wilderness. 14% is true desert and 15% has desert like characteristics. 9% is Antarctica. Most of the remaining 22% are agricultural areas. There may be other areas with a human footprint of some kind but it is insignificant in any relation to global warming. We are like ants based upon the size of the planet. And that Greenhouse Gas you are spouting about is CO2. The best yield for any plant matter (like trees that take in CO2 and give off oxygen) is between 1200-1500 PPM of CO2. That is why some greenhouses pump in CO2 for a higher yield. The average atmospheric CO2 concentrationis around 400 PPM. Anything below 150 PPM and ALL plant matter on earth would begin to die. CO2 is plant food and trees are one of the best renewable resources on the planet. And as a side note, the CO2 levels today were matched long before mankind existed on the planet. The higher the CO2 levels, the more plant matter will thrive and give off oxygen. We cannot accurately predict local weather beyond three days in the future and now you are claiming you will know what the earth will be like? The earth went through cyclic temperature changes long before we arrived on earth and will continue to do so long after we are dead. Search you tube, "Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout - Dr Patrick Moore". He disproves Global Warming and is very funny. 23-5

TheDonald ... Here's what else has been said.......................... EARTH DAY - The annual event first launched on April 22, 1970. The inaugural festivities (organized in part by then hippie and now convicted murderer Ira Einhorn) predicted death, destruction and disease unless we did exactly as progressives commanded. Sound familiar? Behold the coming apocalypse, as predicted on and around Earth Day, 1970: 1. “Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” — Harvard biologist George Wald 2. “We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.” — Washington University biologist Barry Commoner 3. “Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.” — New York Times editorial4. “Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.” — Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich 5. “Most of the people who are going to die in the greatest cataclysm in the history of man have already been born… [By 1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.” — Paul Ehrlich 6. “It is already too late to avoid mass starvation,” — Denis Hayes, Chief organizer for Earth Day 7. “Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central Americawill exist under famine conditions…. By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.” — North Texas State University professor Peter Gunter 8. “In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution… by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half.” — Life magazine 9. “At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.” — Ecologist Kenneth Watt 10. “Air pollution…is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.” — Paul Ehrlich 11. “By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate… that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, ‘Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, ‘I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’” — Ecologist Kenneth Watt 12. “[One] theory assumes that the earth’s cloud cover will continue to thicken as more dust, fumes, and water vapor are belched into the atmosphere by industrial smokestacks and jet planes. Screened from the sun’s heat, the planet will cool, the water vapor will fall and freeze, and a new Ice Age will be born.” — Newsweek magazine 13. “The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.” — Kenneth Wat 37-6

Dan ....Question: Is Carbon Dioxide Poisonous? Answer: You probably know carbon dioxide is a gas that is present in the air you breathe. Plants "breathe" it in order to make glucose. You exhale carbon dioxide gas as a by-product of respiration. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is one of the greenhouse gases. You find it added to soda, naturally occurring in beer, and in its solid form as dry ice. Based on what you know, do you think carbon dioxide is poisonous or is it non-toxic or somewhere in between? The Answer Ordinarily, carbon dioxide is not poisonous. It diffuses from your cells into your bloodstream and from there out via your lungs, yet it is always present throughout your body. However, if you breathe high concentrations of carbon dioxide or re-breathe air (such as from a plastic bag or tent), you may be at risk for carbon dioxide intoxication or even carbon dioxide poisoning. Carbon dioxide intoxication and carbon dioxide poisoning are independent of oxygen concentration, so you may have enough oxygen present to support life, yet still suffer from the effects of rising carbon dioxide concentration in your blood and tissues.21

S... co2 can kill in moderate concentration. submarines know this. 5-2

MikeR... S has an interesting definition of "moderate". Submarines routinely run at CO2 levels in the thousands of ppm. Ted asserts that CO2 starts to pose a risk at 5000 ppm. The literature I've seen says that the risk level is closer to 10,000 ppm and can be survivable at levels as high as 25,000 ppm. Evolutionary biology shows that most of our food crops evolved under levels of 3-4,000 ppm. If that's what you consider "moderate", I suppose S's comment is true. That's a very long way from the current levels of about 400 ppm, though.

Ray Very easy to fix, do what I am doing in China, but I live in Fresno, California, Planting hybrid trees that are 400% more efficient in taking up CO2 and emitting oxygen. 50 million will be planted in the next 4 years all across China with another 500 million to follow over the next 10 years. Maybe some day the policy makers here in the United States will see the light. Nearly all of our senators and congressmen know about the trees here in California, but not one e-mail or phone call has been received. So in January, back to China My wife and I go. 1-3
