War, War, War See other War, War, War Articles Title: Obama's Syria Strategy: Conflict Resolution His Successor's Problem Obama’s Syria Strategy: Conflict Resolution His Successor’s Problem by Stephen Lendman Nearly five years of Obama’s war on Syria accomplished nothing strategically - nor will anything meaningful be resolved during the remainder of his deplorable tenure. His Syria legacy alone includes: • endless US naked aggression;
• hundreds of thousands dead or maimed for life;
• vast destruction, requiring many years to rebuild once conflict ends;
• US-supported ISIS and other terrorist groups controlling most of the country; and
• over half the population displaced, contributing heavily to the severest refugee crisis since WW II.
America had things its own way until Russia intervened responsibly on September 30 - waging real war on ISIS and other terrorist groups, opposite US pretense, supporting the scourge it pretends to oppose. On Friday, Sputnik News reported how dramatically things changed since Russia’s intervention - using its air and sea power, along with deploying the world’s most sophisticated air defense system. Together with previous generation S-300s being installed for Syrian forces, its military and Russia control the nation’s skies - able to target and destroy any potential threat with deadly pinpoint accuracy. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad commented, saying “(w)e believe that the measures taken by Russia after the criminal actions of Turkish aircraft, which downed a Russian aircraft - namely the deployment of air defense systems on land and in the sea - is an important step that will ensure more security for Russian and Syrian militaries.” Washington is worried. Press TV reported an unnamed US official saying Russian S-400s “pose a significant threat to anyone” in areas within their 400km reach at altitudes up to 90,000 feet - including fifth generation warplanes, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. Stealth aircraft are rendered obsolete. They can be destroyed with pinpoint accuracy. S-400s can engage up to 36 targets with up to 72 missiles. No wonder Washington is worried. Its aerial campaign is being altered. Britain, France and other coalition partners are likely doing the same. Sputnik News reported US officials telling Bloomberg News their deployment is “having the unintended effect of grounding America’s manned warplanes,” not its attack drones, as the Pentagon scrambles to alter its strategy. John Kerry raised the issue with Vladimir Putin days earlier to Moscow. Pentagon spokesman Major Tim Smith said “(t)he increasing number of Russian-supplied advanced air defense systems in Syria…is another example that Russia and the regime seek to complicate the global counter- Daesh coalition’s air campaign” - failing to explain Washington and rogue coalition partners support terrorist groups fighting Assad. “Unhelpful actions by Russia and the Syrian regime will not stop coalition counter-Daesh operations in Syria, nor will such actions push the coalition away from specific regions in Syria where Daesh is operating,” Smith added. Captain Jeff Davis said US warplanes will continue flying manned and unmanned strike missions in areas of Syria of its choosing, maintaining the pretense of combating ISIS. Washington refuses to accept Putin’s call for unity among nation states to combat a common scourge. Both countries have polar opposite objectives. Putin wants terrorism eliminated. Obama supports what he claims he’s against, one of his many Big Lies. Separately on Friday, Bashar al-Assad told Dutch NPO2 channel war could end in less than a year if foreign support for ISIS and other terrorist groups stopped - from US-led Western nations, along with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other regional countries. He again rejected foreign pressure for him to step down, stressing it’s for Syrians alone to decide. He’s his nation’s lynchpin, holding things together, overwhelmingly popular for good reason. He’s genuinely concerned about the harm done to millions of Syrian nationals, wanting only to live normal lives again in peace - impossible as long as Washington wants war.
