Okay, I know I can do the research but I've been thinking about this for a while and I figure I'd throw the question out to see what kind of quick answers I get (or what directions people point me in).

Ya know - 3000 people is not a lot of people to die in the collapse of two of the largest office towers in the world. I rarely hear people comment on this or actually consider these numbers. Several hundred people died in the 4 planes and and were fire or rescue/security people who had rushed into the scene. That leaves maybe 2500 or so office workers who died. Those buildings hold thousands of people - I don't know what the approximate numbers would be but I wouldn't be surprised if each tower could hold at least 10k on its own.

Sure many thousands of those people evacuated - and they were very fortunate to have the time to do so, but did a lot of people just not SHOW up for work that day? Is there something odd about these numbers?

What do you folks think, or what has your research shown you? I think - intuitively that the numbers on 9/11, if this were a genuine attack - should be MUCH HIGHER.

My neighbors lost their daughter and son in law in the attacks (airline employees on one of the planes) and my brother's coworker lost her son who worked in the second tower hit.

The son who worked in the second tower called his mother and his wife shortly after the first tower was hit to reassure them that he was fine. They chatted a bit and hung up. He was watching the excitement out his window, believing it was simply an accident. Shortly afterwards, his tower was hit. His mother called him back immediately. She talked to him until the phone went dead. Her son was screaming and trying to escape the flames as were several other people in his office. They were above the floor hit directly. He told her that there was NO WAY OUT... They were desperately trying to get out of the building but they couldn't go down and there was no way to get out by going up. The phone went dead only minutes before the tower collapsed. Apparentlym most of their coworkers hadn't yet arrived to work so weren't even in the building.

Everyone BELOW the floors hit were ordered to evacuate. Most of them did so.

oh man, that is so horrible. my heart goes out to these folks. If nothing else, I would hope that 9/11 points out a great flaw in the design of these skyscapers for rescueing people on the middle floors. The top floors might be able to flee to the roof, and the lower floors might be able to get to the street, but if you're in the middle - they really have no way to rescue you (aside from any issue of whether the buildings were deliberately demolished).
