Title: Why Did So Few People Die in 9/11 WTC Attack?

Okay, I know I can do the research but I've been thinking about this for a while and I figure I'd throw the question out to see what kind of quick answers I get (or what directions people point me in).

Ya know - 3000 people is not a lot of people to die in the collapse of two of the largest office towers in the world. I rarely hear people comment on this or actually consider these numbers. Several hundred people died in the 4 planes and and were fire or rescue/security people who had rushed into the scene. That leaves maybe 2500 or so office workers who died. Those buildings hold thousands of people - I don't know what the approximate numbers would be but I wouldn't be surprised if each tower could hold at least 10k on its own.

Sure many thousands of those people evacuated - and they were very fortunate to have the time to do so, but did a lot of people just not SHOW up for work that day? Is there something odd about these numbers?

What do you folks think, or what has your research shown you? I think - intuitively that the numbers on 9/11, if this were a genuine attack - should be MUCH HIGHER.

Because it was like an hour before the buildings actually collapsed?

Maybe it's as simple as that, but I understand that a lot of people didn't evacuate until fairly late and to get down from the top floors would probably take some people quite a long time. I think it would take me an hour to get down myself. Moreover, I wonder how many people were trapped on the upper floors and couldn't get down. The numbers have always seemed so small to me relative to the number of people who must work in both buildings and all the rescue squads/plane victims.

I think as soon as your building is hit by a jetliner, the evacuation order pretty much goes out. It's not like anyone's going to stay in there working on paperwork or anything. I seem to recall that the 2nd building hit (building #2?) started to evacuate shortly after the first one was hit, at least on a company-by-company basis.

I'm all over 911 conspiracy theories, but I just don't see a viable one here.

The days after it happened I was predicting 10-15K deaths in the WTC's alone, as there were reports they held some 40K-50K people between them (I think).

A number of people may not have arrived at work yet, (if I was working there I would have survived since I wouldn't have shown up before 10 AM) but certainly the time between impact and collapse was enough to allow substantial numbers to evacuate, fortunately.

Several hundred of this number were firefighters, since they were entering and not exiting the towers.

Hopefully, but I was forwarded one email account of a guy that tried to get co-workers to evacuate out of the second tower after the first was hit, but they stayed behind to watch the action, not concerned.

I think it is a little curious that so few died. I'll tell you what I thought was more curious - in the 1993 WTC bombing where a parking structure was destroyed there were only 6 deaths. If you saw the photos, you'd never believe only 6 were killed, but that's what they said.

I was wondering if you had been reading all the links sent to you in your post asking for more info. There were prior warnings to certain companies in the towers, some had even broke their lease and completely moved out. The planes on the average were only 28% full. This was highly odd because those 4 planes had booking glitches which prevented them from full capacity, and coast to coast planes are always full for economic reasons. The 911 event was meant for low casualties and maxium effect. It was still sloppy, but a government engineered event of this size, is going to have some sloppyness.

I had not heard this. Do you have any links that specify company names?

O'Neill's FBI colleague, Mike Dick, aggressively investigated this Israeli ring before and after 911. But like O'Neill, he soon found himself removed from his duties on the orders of the then-head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division Michael Chertoff. Dick was very suspicious when Israeli movers quickly moved Zim American Israeli Shipping Company out of its 10,000 square feet of office space on the 17th Floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The partially Israeli state-owned firm forfeited a $50,000 security deposit when it terminated its lease and vacated the building one week prior to 911. According to a non official cover (NOC) CIA source who worked with Dick, Israeli movers moved explosives into the 17th Floor office space after Zim moved out.

There are other companies. Just google the right names and the links come up. Some have to do with the "art students" and "movers". There was another company called something like "Indigeo"(SP). they also had prior warnings.

I don't recall details, but didn't the first one hit at about 8:30am?

That would be before most people had arrived and settled in for the days work if I'm not mistaken.

On 9/11.. that was not the case.. I can't locate at the moment a link but possibly valis may be able to help ..

good question..it's very curious. IIRC, that day, the news was estimating that there would be $30k+ deaths. the first plane hit at 8:45ish. that is not early for a large office building and you'd expect many more thousands to have been in the buildings. i wonder if there's ever been a number posted of how many actually evacuated.

I've read some of it, but there's just so much going on now, and....sometimes they make me work. What you're saying fits with my understanding of the situation as well and it is very...odd, to say the least. I agree with your conclusion that this event was designed for the highest impact at the lowest cost.

My neighbors lost their daughter and son in law in the attacks (airline employees on one of the planes) and my brother's coworker lost her son who worked in the second tower hit.

The son who worked in the second tower called his mother and his wife shortly after the first tower was hit to reassure them that he was fine. They chatted a bit and hung up. He was watching the excitement out his window, believing it was simply an accident. Shortly afterwards, his tower was hit. His mother called him back immediately. She talked to him until the phone went dead. Her son was screaming and trying to escape the flames as were several other people in his office. They were above the floor hit directly. He told her that there was NO WAY OUT... They were desperately trying to get out of the building but they couldn't go down and there was no way to get out by going up. The phone went dead only minutes before the tower collapsed. Apparentlym most of their coworkers hadn't yet arrived to work so weren't even in the building.

Everyone BELOW the floors hit were ordered to evacuate. Most of them did so.

oh man, that is so horrible. my heart goes out to these folks. If nothing else, I would hope that 9/11 points out a great flaw in the design of these skyscapers for rescueing people on the middle floors. The top floors might be able to flee to the roof, and the lower floors might be able to get to the street, but if you're in the middle - they really have no way to rescue you (aside from any issue of whether the buildings were deliberately demolished).

(aside from any issue of whether the buildings were deliberately demolished).

One of the things the Mom told others directly after the building collapsed was hearing the sounds of possible explosions and her son growing increasingly more and more desperate as each possible escape route down became blocked. The fire engulfed them apparently, burning them to death... I'm sure that the poor woman will never get over listening to her son die so horribly. Imagination is bad enough but at least others have the ability to pretend that their loved ones were overcome by smoke and didn't feel a thing. Reality, for that floor of people, was apparently quite different.

I'm close enough to NY that pilots, airline workers, family, and friends of MANY who died there are neighbors or related to neighbors. There is no way that I believed then or now that this was a "terrorist" attack. It was too easy. Ever been to Logan airport? NO WAY did those "Arab terrorists" get on those planes and no questions were asked. NO WAY did those planes go missing and security & the airforce didn't know it immediately. Hanscom and Pease air force bases are close enough to have sent up whatever personnel & planes are still there to take 'em out LONG before they got close to hitting NY. Someone in authority WANTED NY hit. I've always believed that.

I don't know about you, but the present STATE OF THE UNION scares the crap outa me...

That's what I believe as well. There's plenty of precedent even within our own American history for this kind of thing. Roosevelt and the Navy brass knew that Pearl Harbor was going to be hit. I understand they moved away most of the ships and that the Arizona still being there was an accident of miscommunication. The US govt was willing to sacrifice Pearl Harbor to facilitate entry into WW2 - something highly unpopular with much of the American public at the time.

Obviously we have the examples of the Gulf of Tonkin, and the blowing up of the Maine (to start the Spanish American war), so again - this is with precedent.

For those people who don't believe that extremist elements in the American govt would plan and carry out a 9/11 attack, please consider that these same people have sacrified nearly 2500 American troops (the numbers of dead would be far higher if we did not have such advanced medical techniques since Vietnam) and tens of thousands of Iraqis. The Jacobins in the Bush admin are perfectly capable of killing thousands of Americans (or foreigners) to achieve their vision of a "higher good".

I wholeheartedly agree. When the rest of America realizes this, maybe THEN we can do something about it. One can only hope.
