While the odds are extremely low, it doesnt stave off the fear people have if they get shot they might bleed to death before help arrives. The obvious thing to help mitigate the catastrophic effects of a mass shooting, or any shooting, is to own a weapon and learn how to use it to defend yourself. That being said if you do get hit theres a revolutionary new device thatll plug a bullet wound in a matter of seconds. The Truth about Guns writes: If you read Jon Wayne Taylors excellent series on gunshot wound first aid, youll probably remember rule number one of dealing with a hole: squeeze, squeeze, squeeze until the red blood stops. There is no substitute for pressure in stopping leakage. And while a tourniquet is usually the best way to stanch the flow, depending on the wound location, sometimes a tourniquet isnt an option. Toward that end, RevMedx has developed a wound-plugging syringe, the Xstat, thats meant to stop a thigh bleed kinda like youd plug a hole in your tire . . . Screen Shot 2015-12-09 at 9.07.00 AM As theverge.com reports: The syringe works by injecting small, expandable cellulose sponges into wounds that cant be stopped from bleeding with the use of a tourniquet (e.g. wounds in the groin or armpit). The sponges expand on contact with blood in just 20 seconds, blocking its flow out of the body. Each applicator absorbs up to a pint of blood and up to three syringes can be used on a single patient. The Xstat has just been approved by the FDA for civilian use. No word on cost yet, but this would seem to be a worthy addition to your blowout bag along with a SOF tourniquet, some quick clot and a hell of a lot of gauze. Again, its worth stating the Xstat is in no way a replacement for responsible gun ownership and the ability to defend oneself in a shooting. But, just because you own a gun and know how to use it doesnt mean there is zero chance someone else might not get hit. Thats why something like the Xstat are worthwhile. What do you think of this new device? Poster Comment: This device may work fine with a pistol wound, but a high velocity rifle slug is a different story. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
