Title: Ancient Irish Genome Sequenced By Scientists, Reveals Massive Migration

Genetic analysis of a neolithic woman from near Belfast, Ireland, shows that she had black hair and brown eyes. Pictured: The reconstructed skull of the neolithic woman.

A team of researchers from Trinity College Dublin and Queen’s University Belfast has sequenced the first genomes from ancient Irish people, providing insights into questions about the origins and culture of the region. Results of the study were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

The researchers sequenced the genome of an early farmer woman, who lived near Belfast some 5,200 years ago, and those of three men from a later period, around 4,000 years ago in the Bronze Age, after the introduction of metalworking, according to a statement on the Trinity College Dublin website.

“There was a great wave of genome change that swept into Europe from above the Black Sea into Bronze Age Europe and we now know it washed all the way to the shores of its most westerly island,” Professor Dan Bradley of Trinity College Dublin, who led the study, said.

The study revealed that the Neolithic woman farmer's ancestry originated in the Middle East, where agriculture was invented. The woman was similar to modern people from Spain and the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, and had black hair and brown eyes.

In contrast, the three Bronze Age men from Rathlin Island had at least a third of their ancestry from the Pontic Steppe, a region north of the Black Sea now spread across present-day Russia and Ukraine. They had a gene component that is responsible for blue eyes and an important chromosome variant that causes the genetic disease, haemochromatosis, which causes the body to retain a higher content of iron than normal.

“It is clear that this project has demonstrated what a powerful tool ancient DNA analysis can provide in answering questions which have long perplexed academics regarding the origins of the Irish,” said Eileen Murphy, senior lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast, who was also involved in the study.

With this study, researchers have found clues to the origins of the Irish people and identified some reasons for certain intriguing genetic traits among them, such as a higher incidence of haemochromatosis and an increased lactose tolerance well into adulthood.

Researchers now hope this study will spur further research on the subject. “This degree of genetic change invites the possibility of other associated changes, perhaps even the introduction of language ancestral to western Celtic tongues,” Professor Bradley said.

The Irish woman would seem to predate the migration of the 12 tribes.

Scripture doesn't speak kindly of Leah's children. Israel critized them. Not sure if Dinah as a sinner or sinned against.

Only one seemed to have inherited Jacob's gift of forward thinking and that was his son by Rachel.

I'll have to view this one a little later on. But, let me say that if this video implies that the Ten Tribes migrated into western Europe (as well as other areas) I would contend that in my mind that's a very high probability.

Strong's Concordance

laban: white

Scripture doesn't speak kindly of Leah's children. Israel critized them.

Leah and Rachel were Laban's daughters. The other ladies bearing Jacob's children were not daughters but handmaidens. Laban was Jacob's uncle through his mother Rebecca. Laban in Hebrew means "white" ... Jacob was instructed NOT TO DO as Esau and marry a strange (foreign) woman/women ... so he didn't. He married his white cousins and I would speculate that the handmaidens were white as well.

Let me further say that I do not often get into this discussion because it usually goes nowhere. But, I have watched your activities here on 4UM and know you are a very responsible participant. I do not think that this particular history should have any impact upon us (white people) or upon our thinking so as to create white supremacist ideologies, especially since most are unaware in the 1st place.

My own opinion, which is just speculation based upon scripture (Hosea comes to mind) is that the events if they did indeed occur and have remained hidden for thousands of years will only glorify God !

EDIT: Strong's Concordance

laban: white

original Word: לָבָן

Part of Speech: Adjective

Transliteration: laban

Phonetic Spelling: (law-bawn')

Short Definition: white

NAS Exhaustive Concordance

Word Origin

from laben

Definition white

NASB Translation

white (24), white ones (1).

Laban was not admirable--first recorded bait-and-switch. The deal was for Rachael but he substituted Leah.

If we accept Paul's teaching that the Elect are chosen and not entitled by blood, the conclusion would be that Leah's children are irrelevant. Much as Esau was irrelevant.

Moses, incidentally, married at least one foreign woman--an Ethiopean no less--and chastized his family for disrespecting her.

Laban was not admirable--first recorded bait-and-switch.

Jacob wasn't admirable either but God's will is being done irrespective of man's character defects. Didn't Jacob steal Esau's birthright ? And wasn't it because he (Esau) had taken a foreign wife ?

Much as Esau was irrelevant.

Esau is anything but irrelevant. The Jewish encyclopedia states that modern Jewry descend from Edom (Esau).

As much as mankind would imagine themselves able to determine the mind of God or how God should act that just isn't the way it truly is. It's all His. He's the potter and we're the clay. Our short lifespan hasn't any means of truly comprehending infinity or infinite wisdom.

In the end I think it will play out as intended. One thing I think is important especially for Christians to ponder is that there were 12 Tribes promised land that is today Israel/Palestine and it's being (entirely) claimed by imposters or at best the 2 remaining Tribes that didn't disappear.

Another thing, regardless of how many times I've been told that these so-called Jews are the "Chosen" I can't find where they have ever fulfilled "any" (even one promise) the promises made to Abraham by God.

There are many instances in scripture where the least likely candidate was used by God to fulfill them.

Bible doesn't sugar-coat anything. Yes, Jacob was a thief, and his momma too. I'm not sure what the blessing was other than there could not have been two, but it might have had to do with the right to rule. Obviously, Esau was unfit because he was willing to trade his birthright for a mess of pottage. He couldn't think beyond his stomach. Jacob was God's elect and a far thinker.

Not familiar with the evidence the Jewish encyclopedia uses but I am surprised at the claim. Thought the Edomites disappeared just like the 12 tribes.

The promises made to Abraham and his descendants were inherited by Jacob through this blessing.

Ada, I'd be the first to admit that there has been much time and tampering with the evidence of history to confuse us. God is no respecter of persons so I'm not interested whether one group or another has bragging rites. I'd truly enjoy knowing the truth without Abe Foxman's spin on it. (Trying to lighten the mood here).

The Book of Hosea says much about the tribes forgetting their heritage for a period and then rediscovering it. I think this is beginning to take place. And if it turns out to be true that the west is the remnant descendants of the ten lost tribes it will be the greatest story never told.

I used to comment about this possibility but the conversation would wind up disintegrating into an argument and that doesn't interest me in the least. There are those that want to claim some sort of superiority because of this possibility such as white supremacists and neo-nazis. I don't. I do think it's important for anyone that wishes to understand the possibility that the west was settled by the 10 Israelite tribes get serious about research and keep an open mind as pertains to the facts of history.

Not familiar with the evidence the Jewish encyclopedia uses but I am surprised at the claim. Thought the Edomites disappeared just like the 12 tribes.

I personally went to the main branch of the San Diego library over an extended period of time studying. I read the claim that modern Jewry descends from Edom in their own encyclopedia. Edom was a city built by Esau.

We have been deceived and brain(damaged)washed through many mediums.

EDIT: I'd like to add that there are many indicators or what might be deemed circumstantial evidence. Heraldry (European State Flags) of the 12 Tribes show up in Europe, places contain their names (Dan-ube, Dniper, Den-mark etc., , even the Name of Brit-ain - Covenant Land and Brit-ish = Covenant man ...

I suspect if you were to research this possibility you would at least have to analyze for yourself, why would God make those promises just to have them forgotten or lost ? What group of people on the earth have actually or at least nearly fulfilled the promises made to Abraham. (hint: take a look at what is called The International Quality of Life Index.

I love the subject but really do my best to avoid argumentative discourse.

Esau's wives are confusing to say the least. His first two were supposed to be Hittites and that would make them Indo European.

That would mean that modern Jews are decended from Esau and not not Israel. But perhaps they mean that because Edomites have been in the same area just about forever, they have been holding down the fort so to speak. They did convert to Judaism at some point.

There are so many things that speak to this westerly migration of the Israelites like the Stone of Destiny for instance AKA the Stone of Scone or Lia Fail.

You should learn about this stone and its history. It has been called Jacob's Pillar and has a fantastic history. I'd tell ya about it except I'd leave something out ... you won't regret looking into it, I promise.

Some might attach that name to it. I don't call it anything other than what I've learned from studying the Bible and listening to others more learned than myself. The historical evidence proves it out.

Most of those that argue against it haven't done the homework or may have a built in bias from their upbringing.

Some offer the concept that everything in scripture is spiritual without any bearing on reality in a material world.
