Fifty churches throughout the U.S. have said they will shelter illegal immigrants seeking sanctuary from upcoming raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Sanctuary movement, a political and religious group that works to protect those who illegally entered the U.S. to escape violence and economic instability in Central America, said over the weekend that its network of congregations will welcome any individual who fears he or she will be retargeted for deportation.

The announcement came after a report that the Department of Homeland Security's immigration wing ICE was planning a January crackdown on individuals who had previously evaded deportation.

Out of more than 100,000 people who traveled from Central America to the U.S. over the past year, less than 1,000 will be targeted in the raids.

Poster Comment:

What legal standing do churches have to obstruct federal agents seeking to round up illegals? Raid the churches and arrest the priests/ministers/whatever for obstruction of justice, and strip their 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. This is a huge reason I can't get behind organized "Christianity" in America.

their 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.

If they do have this exemption, they cannot legally oppose any move by federal authorities to round up illegals on their property. They are forbidden to do so by having this exemption. When you accept the benefit, you must cooperate with the authorities. That is the way it is. ;)

UNLESS what you're doing is PC.

Resistance in harmony with the USG's real agenda = no problem.

Do something reasonable and legal the IRS doesn't like -- pay corporate taxes for the rest of time. Unless enough churches are going to start resisting!

But, will there be enough?

I read story at link. Are you aware that the American Revolution started in the pulpits of the churches? ;)

Of course -- over TAXES. This country is literally made of tax rebellion, but try telling that to the IRS and the hundreds of millions living in mortal dread if it. :)

I remember when the churches announced they were going to defy the IRS. Wonder what became of it. If 500 did as it says that's quite a chunk for the goons to start hounding.
