BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A protest in support of Oregon ranchers facing jail time for arson was followed by an occupation of a building at a national wildlife refuge led by members of a family previously involved in a showdown with the federal government.

Ammon Bundy — the son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was involved in a standoff with the government over grazing rights — told The Oregonian on Saturday that he and two of his brothers were among a group of dozens of people occupying the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

Ammon Bundy posted a video on his Facebook page asking for militia members to come help him. He said "this is not a time to stand down. It's a time to stand up and come to Harney County," where Burns is located. Below the video is this statement: "(asterisk)(asterisk)ALL PATRIOTS ITS TIME TO STAND UP NOT STAND DOWN!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! COME PREPARED."

Seems it's not all that militant.

There are no fed employees involved on site, so there's no hostage issues. Going that route downplays the seriousness of the deed, and will be better for garnering public support.

Seems it's more of a civil disobedient, armed sit-in of an empty fed building.

How much time can they get for civil disobedience, a month in county jail, if that? ;)

it seems few people know that a group of native american indians comandeered alcatraz island off san francisco in the 1960s, and they actually DId have a prisoner or two, for a while, until they let them go. they were protesting the us gov's breaking of indian treaties.

its quite a fascinating story, and if you ever visit you can spend literally days at this place. they have archived news footage, etc.

this of course is in addition to its history as a prison, and civil war camp, prior to that., when we went around 2008 i got all kinds of pictures, they still have the spray paint on the walls as the boat approaches the island which says 'this is indian land.'

the indians had people boat out supplies and they lived on the island for about 6 months.

in the end, one of the leaders baby daughters fell off a balcony and died. that greatly hurt morale. and soon after that, there was a huge fire on the island. to this day the feds claim the indians started it, and the indians claim the feds started it, but that pretty much wiped out their occupation. the feds rushed in and arrested all of the remaining indians.

it is a very fascinating tidbit of history.
