Title: IT's WHAT YOU EAT, STUPID! - How Did Americans Get So Fat, In Seven Charts

Americans are fat. They are so fat very few would even bother to click on a hyperlink in this article explaining how fat they are, so instead we will present an animated chart showing the severity of the US obesity problem over the past 30 years.

Cartoons aside, here are the facts: today two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese. Half are afflicted with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure that can often be prevented with better diets, but aren't and as a result debt-funded healthcare costs have exploded, and while this chronic obesity has made pharma companies richer beyond their wildest dreams, it means future US healthcare spending and welfare obligations are unsustainable.

America didn't get this way overnight. The average calories available to the average American increased 25 percent, to more than 2500, between 1970 and 2010, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There was no extra meal added to the day, instead an evolution in the type of foods Americans eat led to steady growth in calories.

Added fats and grains account for a growing share of total caloric intake. These two categories, which include oils and fats in processed foods and flour in cereals and breads, made up about 37 percent of our diet in 1970. By 2010, they were 46 percent—a larger share of the growing pie. One of the main factor: cost; the increasingly more caloric foods become progressively cheaper and more affordable. The result: more of the lower and middle classes gravitated toward it, leading to the epidemic shown above.

Here, courtesy of Bloomberg, are seven charts showing the detail behind America's troubling obesity trend.

First, this is where America's calories come from.

Cheese is replacing milk.

A lot more fat goes into our foods.

Calories from wheat, rice, and corn have increased. This includes refined grains like white bread that provide calories but are stripped of much of the nutrients in whole grains.

There are some indications that Americans are changing their diets to become healthier. For example, we're swapping red meat for chicken.

And though corn syrup boomed since the 1970s, the total amount of sweeteners we eat has declined. That's partly because Americans are drinking less soda.

These positive changes haven't negated the overall increase in calories on our plates. More than two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, compared to less than half in the 1970s.

The government's dietary guidelines are simple: "Almost all people in the United States could benefit from shifting choices to better support healthy eating patterns." Right, now if only the government would also subsidize this healthy - which means more expensive - eating. We won't hold our breath: after all the massive pharma lobby would generate far less profits for its clients if US obesity were to sharply decline as a result of someone doing the right thing.

So until something does take place to shock the US out of its fatty momentum, here is Family Guy.

Ever see any fat people in concentration camps?

During 1930s depression, fat people were few and far between.

I only eat wisely. Since I was a trucker most of my life, I had to deal with truck stop food much of the time. For breakfast it was usually steak and eggs. But I did cook for myself as often as possible, especially when at home. And when I was driving solo, I brought along the electric cooler and packed it with sandwiches.

At home now, I eat organic whenever possible since keeping the pesticides and chemical fertilizers out of your food is the surest way to good health. ;)

I was talking to a woman out here and she told me during the depression that her family lived on the farm. They had milk and a garden for fresh produce, but the people in town had a hard time.

Now, this town has turned into a bedroom community of sorts. Most people live here and work in Carthage, Joplin or Pittsburg, Kansas.

It is a dilemma, but a curable one, and only on a personal level.

If you follow the trend of eating unhealthy food, eating out all the time, eating 'instant' food all the time, you are shaving at least ten years off of your life span.

And you don't have to eat expensive food to get and stay healthy either.

The fix is very simple: Remove white sugar, white flour, and white starch from your diet.

Find and start a good LIFE-SAVING PALEO DIET and stick with it.

Replace white sugar with natural sugars (e.g., real maple syrup in coffee, real honey in tea). The average American eats over 180 pound of sugar each year and are literally killing themselves with it.

It is really not that much more work, once you break the habit mold of eating that you've (had all your life) - LoL.

But you can do it. It is much harder if you have kids at home, or have a stubborn spouse that just refuses to 'get healthy.' You can still do it.

The difference back then was that EVERYBODY was physically ACTIVE - they had to be to stay alive. They worked off the carbs they ate, didn't eat nearly as much refined sugars, and stayed healthy. The cancer and heart attack rates were much lower back then per capita now.

Many studies have been done on Orientals migrating to the US, and consequently acquiring 'The American Diet' of cheeseburgers, fried foods, and massive doses of white starch and sugar. The comparative studies found overwhelmingly that their life expediencies dropped at least ten years, and their cancer and heart attack rates more than doubled.

The pharmaceutical companies don't want you to hear this also. Fortunes are being made off of the fast food chains on cholesterol and blood thinning drugs alone.

====================================

If you are referring to 'quantity' consumed, then yes, quantity is a major factor.

If you eat large quantities of food and are still hungry, your body will absorb the extra fat and not be satisfied while at the same time your heart and vital organs load up with deadly fat and cholesterol, which will kill you graveyard dead.

Its not how much you eat, its what you eat.

Kinda like its not what you know that will kill you, its what you don't know.

If the USDA's figures are correct, I'm happy to see that consumption of margarine is dropping. I was raised on that vile emulsification.

I was walking up to the local McDonald's to use the internet when mine was not working at home. One time, there were a bunch of fat people standing in the order line. This is a symptom of our fast food and fast lane lifestyle. ;)

Replace margarine (for cooking) with olive oil or real butter. Margarine is made from corn, which is high in glucose (sugar).

I use bacon grease with a dab of olive oil for sauteing vegetables in the pan or grilling meat on the stove top.

Bacon will not hurt you. Cook it in the oven @ 400F for 20 minutes (varies with your oven) on a flat cookie/baking sheet. Lay it on foil. Save the grease after it cools in a glass mason jar in the fridge and use that for sauteing vegetables or searing meats on the stove. It is much healthier than margarine, and costs you nothing. Plus, you get to eat the bacon.

No point.

When people have little to eat, there are no fat people.

Eat whatever you can find, anything, everything, LITTLE QUANTITY, ONE DOES NOT GET FAT.

"""Starchy foods are not fatterning, per se. .......Weight gain typically results from eating more calories than your body uses and calories can be from any source - protein, fat, carbohydrate or alcohol. Carbohydrate contains 4kcal per gram compared to fat, which contains 9kcal per gram. .....

OK, thank you.

And you are correct with the exception you can eat all of certain foods you want and not gain wait.
