This is the First GOP Candidate to Support Constitutional Convention Whos Next? Conservative talk-radio host Mark Levins book The Liberty Amendments has influenced GOP Presidential candidate Marco Rubio to call for a Constitutional Convention if hes elected President. He sees it as one of the most important steps to set term limits and pass a balanced budget amendment. According to The Blaze: Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called for a convention of the states to amend the Constitution to push for term limits, a balanced budget and other measures. One of the first things I will do when I am in office is
put the weight of the presidency behind of a constitutional convention of the states so we can pass term limits on members of Congress and the Supreme Court, and so we can pass a balanced budget amendment, the Republican presidential candidate told an audience in Clinton, Iowa, Tuesday. The announcement was well received by the Convention of States Project, which put out a video after the announcement. Meanwhile, syndicated talk-radio host Mark Levin, whose book, The Liberty Amendments, helped inspire the movement, tweeted, Rubio endorses Convention of the States! Will other GOP contenders support it as well? Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 1.04.24 PM Rubio is not the first GOP candidate to back to idea. Ohio Gov. John Kasich has championed the idea in the past but has talked little about it during his campaign. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee also supports a convention. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who dropped out of the GOP race, also endorsed the idea. After talking to the crowd, Rubio talked to reporters about the idea, the Des Moines Register reported. It is something we feel very positive about. I think it is the only way that you are ever going to get term limits, and the only way that you are ever going to get a balanced budget amendment, Rubio said. I think you would have to limit the convention, and that is what they are proposing: a very limited convention on specific delineated issues that they would talk about like term limits and a balanced budget amendment. Under Article V of the U.S. Constitution, 34 states are required for a Convention of the States, and amendments would have to be ratified by 38 states. Its interesting to see the Liberty Movement, promoted successfully by Ron Paul and others, is growing in popularity. Those of us familiar with the Constitution know that the way to amend it, is through Constitutional Conventions. Not through signing statements and Executive Orders. Those arent Constitutional. What do you think? Is a Constitutional Convention a good idea? Why or why not? Leave a comment with your thoughts below. You can watch Rubio here: Poster Comment: Tweet at source.
