Prof Stephen Hawking Has More Bad News For Humanity: We’re About To Wipe Ourselves Out

feed_manager_auto_publish_494--autopubtest_WPTUMBLR_485

Cheery physicist Professor Stephen Hawking says that mankind could be wiped out by our own creations within the next 100 years.

Answering audience questions at this year’s BBC Reith Lectures, he said that our rush to understand and improve life through science and technology could be humanity’s undoing.

He has previously suggested that colonising other planets will be the only way that the human race can survive, but he warns that we may lose Earth to some kind of major disaster before we have a chance to properly do so.

“Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low,” he explained, “it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years.

"By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.

"However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period.”

It’s not the first time the professor has mongered doom; he has previously warned that AI robots will wipe us out unless we ban them first and that hostile aliens are about to destroy us.

This latest warning comes with the footnote that further research into science and technology will provide “new ways things can go wrong”.

“It’s important to ensure that these changes are heading in the right directions,” he added.

“In a democratic society, this means that everyone needs to have a basic understanding of science to make informed decisions about the future.

"So communicate plainly what you are trying to do in science, and who knows, you might even end up understanding it yourself.

“We are not going to stop making progress, or reverse it, so we must recognise the dangers and control them.”

From the article:

I don't think any of us will be around to see it. ;)

Ya know, it makes me a little sad to see our generation dying off ... but, on the other hand I wouldn't exchange having this opportunity of life enjoying some of the very best music ever created on earth that I truly cherish.

I worked concert security for many of those bands and they were great for the most part. I got to kick a lot of butt and throw out loads of assholes. It didn't pay very well (extra money), but I was good at it. ;)

before mosh pits

We worked shows with mosh pits also.

One time at Woodstock '94 they called us in early because the bands started early. We got in there and there was a guy down front with his girlfriend on his shoulders. They were telling him to get her down and he wouldn't get her down.

There were these two old hippies there that were at the first Woodstock. I told them, "Spread out! I'm coming in. I jumped in and circled around the crowd. Someone reached out and grabbed the girl by the wrist.

Her boyfriend was taking off for the mosh pit. I grabbed him by the wrist before he got in there and reeled him in. I pushed him up against the barricade, put my hand under his behind and the guys pulled him out. Then they pulled me out.

Someone threw a wad of muddy straw and hit me in the face. There was a black guy hosing down the crowd. I tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and hosed me off.

I saw him again at Lollapalooza in Des Moines. He was on the crew cart. When he saw me he stopped the cart and jumped off. He ran over and gave me a big hug and said, "Tex, how ya doing!" He remembered me because he washed off my face.

Another time we were working a how at Medusa's in Chicago. I was walking along the edge of the mosh pit. Some kid ran onto me from behind. I saw him a few minutes later laughing about it. I took care of him, too. You just don't get a free shot on me and get away with it. LOL

We always used ear plugs.

At one show, I knew this girl in the guest section. She said to me, "What kind of drugs are you doing?" I said, "What are you talking about?" She said, "What are those orange things?" I told her, "Those are ear plugs. What are you thinking?" ROTFLOL!

If you had extras you should have offered her a chance to "score" a pair at a premium price.
