Blizzard Shuts Down Washington D.C. – Except For This Crack Army Unit

Screen Shot 2016-01-24 at 8.16.23 PM

While everyday Americans scurried to their homes and hunkered down during the storm of the century, a little-known unit of the US Army was diligently standing guard over one of the most revered sites in military lore. Guarding the tomb of the unknown soldier is prestigious work, and the US Army’s ‘Old Guard’ does it, regardless of wind, rain or blizzards. According to The Blaze:

As millions in and around the nation’s capital hunker down and ride out winter storm Jonas, the Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery is still at its post, unfazed by the treacherous, blizzard conditions.

“I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved,” read a tweet from the Old Guard on Friday, quoting the General Orders for Sentries.

The Old Guard keeps watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24/7 and escorts military funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, among other duties. It is the oldest active infantry unit in the U.S. Army.

“As a record breaking snow storm hits the Washington, D.C. area, Sentinels from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) continue to stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, Va. The Tomb Guards maintain a constant vigil at the Tomb no matter the weather conditions,” a Facebook post from the Old Guard on Friday reads.

The nation’s capital was forecast to get up to 30 inches of snow this weekend, with other areas such as Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City also receiving up to two feet.

More than 75 million people are feeling the impacts of the storm, which meteorologists have said is one for the record books.

With such an harsh forecast, most Americans would understand if the Old Guard called it a day and took off until the weather improved. But not this elite unit, they kept watch, all night, all day, snow, ice or rain.

These are unique soldiers who make us all proud to be Americans.

What do you think? Could you guard the tomb at 2:00am in the middle of a snow storm? Leave a comment with your thoughts below.

I, and a group of cadets, visited their underground post many years ago as part of a special tour arranged by one of their former members.

If anybody crosses their path, please let them know there's one stinking heretic out there who'd love to see them keeping watch over the The Unknown Battleline instead - - the Rio Grande.

Said heretic is obnoxtulous enough to consider the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to be in virtually zero danger of violation -- especially during a blizzard.

Heresy..... it doesn't pay anywhere near as well as dropping bombs on Ayrab weddings, but somebody's got to do it. Those who hate what I've just said, may they never live to see its merits.

The Unknown Battleline

Indeed, the Mexican border needs to have a couple of Battalions of crack troops stationed there to keep out the wetbacks. The Mexican border is so porous that it is like a sieve. ;)
